Israel’s first nationwide general strike since the Hamas attacks of 7 October, which was convened in support of a deal to free hostages held in Gaza, has ended after eight hours with a court order for workers to go back to their jobs.

The strike was organised amid widespread public anger at the government’s handling of the war in Gaza after the discovery of the bodies of six hostages at the weekend.

It was called by Israel’s largest trade union, Histadrut, from 6am on Monday, closing government and municipal offices as well as schools and many private businesses. Israel’s international airport, Ben Gurion, was reported to have shut down at 8am local time (6am BST) for two hours.

Throughout its history, Earth has undergone five mass extinction events. The most recent was the one that killed all the dinosaurs.

The mass extinction event that wiped out all non-avian dinosaurs 66 million years ago was caused by a giant asteroid that slammed into the Earth.

Not only did this spell the end of an era for dinosaurs, but about 80 percent of animals on the planet were obliterated as well.

After performing an analysis of metal isotopes that were scattered from the impact, scientists think they have now figured out the origin of the asteroid.

It’s not from the main asteroid belt, as previously believed, but from the outer solar system beyond Jupiter.

New York City’s homicide rate remains higher than it was before the pandemic in 2019 — even as the national average has largely returned and even dropped below pre-pandemic levels, a major new national crime study has found.

Homicide rates are up about 20% through the first half of 2024 compared to the same time in 2019, the Council on Criminal Justice’s (CCJ) newly-released Mid-Year Crime Report found.

And while the city’s homicide rate was is down 20% from the same time in 2023, over the last three years the city has been consistently unable to return to pre-pandemic homicide levels of about 1.5 murder victims per 100,000 people.

“‘I’m left here with nothing but memories,” said Danette Hollie, whose 37-year-old son Nazim Berry was fatally shot in the back of the head after refusing to give a madman a free cigar at a Crown Heights bodega in February.

Radio blackouts have been reported across Earth after the Sun released powerful flares.

There is a 65% chance of this happening across the planet still and it could impact aviation and satellite communication too.

Blackouts have already been reported over parts of the Pacific Ocean, according to the alert issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Other radio blackouts have been tracked by scientists across the globe over the last several days.

Solar flares are also expected in the weeks to come, NASA told DailyMail.com.

A solar flare happens when there is an emission of electromagnetic radiation from the Sun’s atmosphere called a sunspot.

This means radiation is blasted away from the Sun’s surface and depending on where it erupts from, it can launch towards Earth.

The latest edition of an annual UBS wealth report notes that while “the global economy is in the midst of a dramatic structural upheaval,” wealth is growing once again after a downturn through the pandemic.

UBS analyzed income and wealth data from 56 markets, representing “92% of the world’s wealth,” in its Global Wealth Report 2024, released Wednesday. The report’s overarching theme found that global wealth grew by 4.2% in 2023, offsetting a loss of 3% in 2022. Even in the face of continued inflation, adjusted global wealth grew by 8.4%.

However, overall global wealth growth is down, from an annual average of 7% between 2000 and 2010 to just over 4.5% between 2010 and 2023, the report said. This equates to a reduction in global wealth of almost one-third.
