Trump’s state visit to U.K. set to focus on trade, tech and Ukraine – National– globalnews.ca

U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in the United Kingdom on Tuesday for a state visit during which the British government hopes a multibillion-dollar technology deal will show the trans-Atlantic bond remains strong despite differences over Ukraine, the Middle East and the future of the Western alliance.

State visits in Britain blend 21st-century diplomacy with royal pageantry. Trump’s two-day trip comes complete with horse-drawn carriages, military honor guards and a glittering banquet inside a 1,000-year-old castle — all tailored to a president with a fondness for gilded splendor.

King Charles III will host Trump at Windsor Castle on Wednesday before talks the next day with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers, the British leader’s rural retreat.

Starmer’s office said the visit will demonstrate that “the U.K.-U.S. relationship is the strongest in the world, built on 250 years of history” — after that awkward rupture in 1776 — and bound by shared values of “belief in the rule of law and open markets.” There was no mention of Trump’s market-crimping fondness for sweeping tariffs.

The White House expects the two countries will strengthen their relationship during the trip and celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, according to a senior White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity. It was unclear how the U.K. was planning to mark that chapter in their shared history.

“The trip to the U.K. is going to be incredible,” Trump told reporters Sunday. He said Windsor Castle is “supposed to be amazing” and added: “It’s going to be very exciting.”

Zelenskyy calls for European air defense system as Russian strikes wreak havoc in Zaporizhzhia– www.euronews.com

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday called for a joint protection of our European skies with a multilayered air defence system after Russian forces bombarded the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia with rockets overnight, killing at least one person.

The attack also left dozens injured, including four children, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday as he urged European leaders to make the continent safe by building an ambitious air defence umbrella.

With the war grinding on since Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbour more than 3½ years ago, there has been no let-up in Russian strikes on civilian areas of Ukraine and its army’s push on the roughly 1,000-kilometre (620-mile) front line.

A settlement to end the war appears to be no closer despite months of U.S.-led peace efforts. U.S. President Donald Trump’s ultimatums and deadlines for Putin to engage with proposals to stop the fighting have passed without obvious consequences.

Just over the past two weeks, Zelenskyy said on Telegram, Russia has launched more than 3,500 drones, more than 2,500 powerful glide bombs, and almost 200 missiles at targets inside Ukraine.

Russian glide bombs, usually dropped by jets at high altitude and far behind the front line, and drone swarms are a major challenge for Ukrainian defences. Glide bombs aren’t very accurate, but they leave big craters, and Ukraine has no effective countermeasure against them.

Convicted ex-leader rushed to a hospital in Brasilia after falling ill at his residence, his son says.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to prison last week for plotting a coup, has been rushed to hospital after falling ill while under house arrest, his son said.

The emergency visit on Tuesday is the 70-year-old former army captain’s second trip to the hospital since his conviction.

Bolsonaro has had recurring intestinal issues since he was stabbed while campaigning in 2018, including at least six related surgeries, the last being a 12-hour-long procedure in April. He won the election that year, and governed from 2019 to 2023.

“Bolsonaro felt unwell a short while ago, with a severe bout of hiccups, vomiting, and low blood pressure,” his son, Flavio, wrote on X.

“He was taken to DF Star [Hospital] accompanied by correctional police officers who guard his home in Brasília, as it was an emergency,” he wrote.

Bolsonaro visited the same hospital on Sunday, and had eight skin lesions removed and sent for biopsies.

A panel of Supreme Court justices on Thursday found the former leader guilty of plotting a coup after he lost the 2022 election to current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

They sentenced him to 27 years and three months in prison.

Washington, D.C.’s funding has been restored in a new draft of Congress’s continuing resolution legislation, averting the potential of millions in lost money.

House Republicans are trying to keep the government open through Nov. 21 and avoid a shutdown. While the current resolution does not hold any policy priorities favorable to either side, GOP House members said it does restore funding granted by the 2025 budget.

The past CR forced D.C. to rely on 2024 spending levels, which were millions below 2025 funds. While forecasts pointed to cuts near $1 billion, Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office said the cuts ended up being around $410 million.

The mayor’s office had been waiting for Congress to unfreeze the city’s funds to avoid cuts to city services. Bowser had instated hiring freezes, reduced non-personnel services, and pushed off or shifted costs down the line.

The CR, if passed, allows D.C. to maintain its 2026 budget plan.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has accused Democrats of “openly pining for a government shutdown.”

“We need responsible options here to keep the government open while all this work continues, and Republicans are committed to making that happen,” Johnson told reporters Tuesday. “Predictably and unfortunately, there are some Democrats who are openly pining for a government shutdown.”

NASA’s Perseverance rover has uncovered what scientists describe as the most compelling evidence yet of possible life on Mars. A mudstone core drilled in July 2024 from a rock named “Chevaya Falls” within the Bright Angel region of Jezero Crater has revealed minerals and textures commonly linked with microbial activity on Earth. The sample contains vivianite, an iron phosphate, and greigite, an iron sulfide, both often formed in water-rich, oxygen-poor environments. These patterns, including “leopard spot” textures, suggest ancient chemical reactions that may have supported microbial life. While NASA stresses this is not proof of life, the findings represent the closest scientists have come to identifying a potential biosignature on the Red Planet.

The drilled core revealed fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts called “leopard spots” and nodules embedded within layered sediments. Instruments aboard Perseverance, SHERLOC and PIXL, mapped organic carbon alongside phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in repeating patterns. The minerals vivianite and greigite stood out because, on Earth, they form in microbial-influenced environments. This bullseye-like arrangement mirrors electron transfer reactions that microbes perform in oxygen-poor muds. Importantly, these features developed in water-laid sediments rather than volcanic rock, strengthening the case for ancient habitability.

Netanel Raviv and a team at the McKelvey School of Engineering (part of Washington University in St. Louis) are continuing to develop a way to embed traceable digital ‘fingerprints’ into 3D-printed objects.

Initially reported by 3D Printing Industry, the markers are designed in a way to be detectable, even if the printed object has been broken, because they can be identified with just a fragment of the object. Depending on the fingerprint, information such as what printer was used and when the object was created can be embedded in the print.

One of the biggest practical use cases for this development is, of course, forensics. Traceable fingerprints are crucial for helping law enforcement track ghost gun manufacturing operations. We reported on a similar approach just a few months ago in which police were able to identify markers left behind when printing.

The study employed a double-blind, split-face design, comparing the left and right sides of the face and using advanced instruments along with subject self-assessments. The set of instruments used, together with the findings, is reported in the team’s published article in the Journal of Dermatologic Science and Cosmetic Technology.

“Our results indicated that the pterostilbene emulsion remarkably improved skin elasticity, firmness, and reduced wrinkles, such as forehead, undereye, and Crow’s feet wrinkles, shares co-author Zhiyuan Chen, Founder of Guangzhou Luanying Cosmetics Co., Ltd. “It also increased the thickness of the epidermis layer, enhanced collagen and elastic fibers, and minimized skin pores.”

Compared to the control emulsion, the pterostilbene emulsion brought about statistically significant improvements, and all subjects expressed higher satisfaction with the pterostilbene emulsion. These results collectively demonstrated the superior anti-aging efficacy of the pterostilbene emulsion through multiple mechanisms.

President Donald Trump teased on Monday that a deal has been made with China regarding trade and the future of TikTok.

“The big Trade Meeting in Europe between The United States of America, and China, has gone VERY WELL! It will be concluding shortly,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“A deal was also reached on a ‘certain’ company that young people in our Country very much wanted to save,” he said, referring to TikTok. “They will be very happy!”

TikTok was set to be inaccessible to American users in January, but Trump delayed the start date of the ban’s enactment to find an American buyer for the social media platform. China’s ByteDance owns the app, which poses national security concerns for the United States.

After months of negotiations and setbacks, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the U.S. and China are “very close” to finalizing a deal on TikTok.

“We made very good progress on the technical details of the agreement. In terms of the overall agreement itself, our Chinese counterparts have come with a very aggressive ask,” he told reporters in Madrid, Spain, on the second day of talks. “We will see if we can get there. At present, we are not willing to sacrifice our national security for a social media app.”

Cracker Barrel Suspends Restaurant Remodels, Keeps Americana Style– www.breitbart.com

After pledging to restore its “Old Timer” logo, Cracker Barrel announced Tuesday it will suspend its restaurant remodel program in response to customer concerns over modernization plans.

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store said in a statement on Tuesday that it will halt remodels of its restaurants and maintain its traditional branding in response to widespread customer feedback. The company revealed the update in a post on X and on its website, noting that guests had voiced opposition to both the new logo design and changes to store interiors.

“We’re continuing to listen. Today, we’re suspending our remodels. If your restaurant hasn’t been remodeled, you don’t need to worry, it won’t be,” the company wrote. “With our recent announcement that our ‘Old Timer’ logo will remain, along with our bigger focus in the kitchen and on your plate, we hope that today’s step reinforces that we hear you.”

The company added that while it tested a modernized interior design in only four of its 660 locations, the plan will not move forward. Cracker Barrel reaffirmed its commitment to its signature “vintage Americana” atmosphere, including rocking chairs on porches, fireplaces, peg games, and antiques sourced from its Lebanon, Tennessee, warehouse.

Cracker Barrel also emphasized that the “Old Timer” logo, featuring the well-known character Uncle Herschel, would remain on road signs, menus, and in stores. The chain recently restored “Uncle Herschel’s Favorite Breakfast Platter” to its menu, pointing to customer demand for tradition.

The decision comes after weeks of backlash to Cracker Barrel’s rebranding efforts, which included a redesigned logo that omitted the classic illustration. The logo change was part of a broader $700 million modernization plan led by CEO Julie Felss Masino, which also included updated restaurant interiors and menu changes.

Company cofounder Tommy Lowe criticized the redesign in late August, calling the new logo “pitiful” and urging leadership to “keep it country.” The uproar intensified after Cracker Barrel’s stock price dropped more than 12 percent following the rollout of the new design.

President Donald Trump also weighed in, encouraging the company to revert to its classic branding. Trump congratulated Cracker Barrel after the reversal, saying the move could help restore customer loyalty.

In its Tuesday statement, Cracker Barrel reiterated its long-standing values, first established when the company opened in 1969: “hard work, family, and scratch-cooked food made with care.” The company stressed that while it may experiment with new platforms and menu items, the heritage and country hospitality that defined the brand would remain central.

“Our 70,000 hard-working team members look forward to welcoming you for breakfast, lunch or dinner soon,” the company expressed.

The U.S. Supreme Court delivered a win for the Trump administration in its bid to enforce immigration laws in California on Monday. The ruling is the latest in a string of SCOTUS orders revoking overreaching injunctions issued by rogue lower court judges.

In its 6-3 decision, the high court placed a temporary stay on a lower court injunction that prohibited Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from carrying out deportation operations in Los Angeles, California. The injunction was issued in July by Biden-appointed District Judge Maame E. Frimpong, who argued that plaintiffs would likely succeed on their claims that the administration’s raids violated the Fourth Amendment.

According to Monday’s Supreme Court order, the temporary stay on Frimpong’s block will remain in effect “pending the disposition of the appeal in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and disposition of a petition for a writ of certiorari, if such a writ is timely sought.” The stay will terminate if a potential petition from the government to SCOTUS is denied by the high court or if SCOTUS agrees to take up the matter and render a final judgement in the case.

Associate Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson would have denied the administration’s application for relief.

In a concurring opinion, Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh argued that “the Government has made a sufficient showing to obtain a stay pending appeal.” He laid out several reasons, one of which included the argument that “plaintiffs likely lack Article III standing to seek a broad injunction restricting immigration officers from making these investigative stops.”

E. Jean Carroll ADMITS She Used “Tricks” to Look “F*ckable” to Sway the Jury– wltreport.com

This is just disgusting…

E. Jean Carroll, the deranged woman who accused President Trump of raping her in the ’90s, just confessed that the entire trial was an act — complete with costumes.

In order to win her case, Caroll says that she and her lawyers manipulated her hair, makeup, and clothes in order to appear “f*ckable” to the jurors and convince them she was sexually-desirable to President Trump.

She said she cut her hair into the same style she had it in the ’90s and wore the same exact clothing. A makeup artist did her hair and makeup before the trial everyday, for the big show.

She admitted, “It was enough, it was enough. It was a trick.”

Watch this for yourself:

This reeks of delusion.

President Trump notoriously shut down Carroll’s rape accusation, claiming that she isn’t even his “type.”

For reference, this is her in the ’90s:

I could be wrong, but I really don’t think Carroll’s “trick” worked as well as she thinks it did…

Still, it’s an admission of fraud.

We knew she was a fraudster this entire time, but to hear her say it — point-blank — is frankly, disturbing.

Carroll’s admission comes right on the heels of a federal appeals court handing her a win and upholding the case.

Fox News reported:

President Donald Trump is still facing a $83.3 million payment to writer E. Jean Carroll after a federal appeals court rejected his challenge of a defamation verdict against him Monday.

The ruling from the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upholds a lower court decision finding that Trump did, in fact, defame Carroll. Trump’s lawyers argued his comments about Carroll were protected by presidential immunity and that the verdict in the case was unjust. The three-judge panel rejected both of those claims.

“We conclude that Trump has failed to identify any grounds that would warrant reconsidering our prior holding on presidential immunity. We also conclude that the district court did not err in any of the challenged rulings and that the jury’s damages awards are fair and reasonable,” the court opinion read.

“The record in this case supports the district court’s determination that the ‘the degree of reprehensibility’ of Mr. Trump’s conduct was remarkably high, perhaps unprecedented,” the court added.

The appeals court should have seen this video before ruling on that case…

On another note, did anyone else notice the background?

Is that Carroll’s house?!

If so, that hoarding situation she’s got going on is yet another testament to her insanity.

What a nasty woman.

The protesters demanded that police officers responsible for excessive use of force during months of unrest be punished, including for alleged rape threats against a female student.

The protests started in November when a concrete canopy collapsed at a train station in Serbia’s north, killing 16 people. The disaster ignited an anti-corruption movement led by university students alleging graft-fueled negligence as its cause.

Student Nikolina Sindjelic, who was detained last month during the protests, said she was beaten and sexually harassed during her detention. Sindjelic told the rally that the “entire state system has been directed against its own citizens.”

“They (government) beat us because they are afraid of us,” Sindjelic said in a speech outside the headquarters of a special police unit, whose commander she accused of rape threats. “They have hit us and they will hit us because they know it is all over (for them).”

What are Bacteria? | Microbiology Society

What are Bacteria? | Microbiology SocietyA research paper published in Cell claims to have discovered a form of E. coli that thrives by transferring electrons to conductive surfaces. The end-result of the process is bacteria that exhale electricity, making them potential future bio-batteries. The bacteria can only be grown under certain conditions that, right now, can only be duplicated in a lab. They immediately “die” outside those conditions.

Scientists just discovered that Escherichia coli (a bacteria best known for occasionally ruining your romaine lettuce) has a hidden superpower. In the absence of oxygen, these tiny microbes can literallysurvive by dumping electrons into their environment, effectively “respiring” electricity. If that sounds like something from a budget Marvel origin story, you’re not wrong…..

Inside the bacteria, a molecule called NADH (which usually helps generate energy) starts shoveling electrons like a caffeine-addicted coal worker. These electrons get passed to HNQ, a weirdly named molecule (it’s called 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, if you want to know how Elon Musk’s next child might be named) that acts like a molecular extension cord.

HNQ then sprints those electrons out of the cell, straight into an electrode. And at the heart of this bizarre process is a little enzyme called NfsB, which basically acts like a bouncer, making sure those electrons head out the door properly.

When researchers deleted the gene for NfsB, the electricity breathing stopped. Add it back in? The bacteria lit up the circuit like Christmas. Eureka!

Immediately after the Big Bang, which occurred around 13.8 billion years ago, the universe was dominated by unimaginably high temperatures and densities. However, after just a few seconds, it had cooled down enough for the first elements to form, primarily hydrogen and helium. These were still completely ionized at this point, as it took almost 380,000 years for the temperature in the universe to drop enough for neutral atoms to form through recombination with free electrons. This paved the way for the first chemical reactions.

The oldest molecule in existence is the helium hydride ion (HeH+), formed from a neutral helium atom and an ionized hydrogen nucleus. This marks the beginning of a chain reaction that leads to the formation of molecular hydrogen (H2), which is by far the most common molecule in the universe.

Recombination was followed by the ‘dark age’ of cosmology: although the universe was now transparent due to the binding of free electrons, there were still no light-emitting objects, such as stars. Several hundred million years passed before the first stars formed.
