Congressional Democrats are referring outgoing Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem to the Justice Department for lying under oath during her oversight hearings before the House and Senate earlier this month.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the ranking members of their chambers’ respective judiciary committees, asked Attorney General Pam Bondi on Monday to open a perjury investigation into Noem’s “demonstrably false statements” in front of Congress on March 3 and 4.

“A number of her statements appear to violate criminal statutes prohibiting perjury and knowingly making false statements to Congress,” they wrote in a seven-page letter, citing two federal laws to support their request.

“After months of evading our Committees’ requests to testify in routine oversight hearings, Secretary Noem made a series of demonstrably false statements in a brazen attempt to undermine critical congressional oversight of the Department of Homeland Security,” the letter states.

The top Democrats point to Noem’s testimony on whether the Department of Homeland Security complies with court orders as an example of a false statement. They argued DHS has repeatedly defied court orders, but Noem insisted otherwise.

Kristi Noem received a summary demotion from President Donald Trump a day after a Senate hearing exposed a massive $220 million DHS ad campaign that seemed more about promoting Kristi Noem than DHS. Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) all but accused Noem of lying when she claimed President Trump approved the campaign in advance. Action by President Trump would indicate she did not, indeed, seek prior approval before she ran a pro-Noem campaign using American tax dollars to do it.

Noem will be reassigned as “Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas,” which President Trump called “our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere.” Trump has chosen Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) to replace him. The Senator is popular with the MAGA base. He is known for his firebrand confrontations with Progmericans during Senate hearings.

The Department of Homeland Security called on Democratic politicians, legacy media outlets, and left-wing organizations to stop “demonizing DHS law enforcement.”

The request comes less than a week after the assassination of conservative Republican activist and Turning Point USA Founder Charlie Kirk, and repeated attacks on ICE officers throughout the country, including two incidents over the last week.

“This hateful rhetoric is inspiring political violence in our country and assaults against our brave DHS law enforcement,” read a release issued on Wednesday from the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin asked left-wing politicians, activists, organizations and groups to halt the inflammatory rhetoric “before someone else is killed.”
