Tensions in the state have escalated, with protests denouncing the killing of Renee Good by an ICE officer she hit with her SUV earlier this month.
The agency’s detention of four children in the Columbia Heights Public School District has further fueled anger against ICE officers. Superintendent Zena Stenvik told reporters Wednesday that nearly a third of students in her district have stayed home in recent weeks out of fear of the operations.
School officials said two children were taken on Tuesday, including a 17-year-old boy on his way to classes. Later that afternoon, Liam Ramos was also taken. Critics say ICE used the 5-year-old as “bait” to enter his parents’ house.

William Eduardo Moran Carballo, a Salvadoran national with a lengthy rap sheet who has been living unlawfully in the United States, rammed his vehicle into Customs and Border Protection agents during an operation Wednesday morning in Compton, California, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Washington could soon join a handful of states that require public colleges and universities to offer abortion pills on campus.
Lawmakers in the state House listened to testimonies for and against Senate Bill 5826 during a hearing Thursday, The News Tribunereports.
The bill, sponsored by state Sen. T’wina Nobles, D-Fircrest, would require higher education institutions with a health center to offer abortion pills on campus. Institutions without a health center would be required to provide referrals to abortion facilities.
All public colleges and universities also would be required to create a webpage with information about abortion, prenatal care, and other “reproductive health” services.
Rep. John James, a Michigan Republican running for governor, has launched a new ad tying the fate of Trump’s second term and the America First agenda to James’ home state of Michigan.
On Thursday, James released an ad titled “Impeached,” claiming that Michigan, with its open U.S. Senate seat and four competitive House races, is “ground zero” in the fight to keep Congress under Republican control.

An Emerson College Polling national survey released Thursday found that congressional Democrats have a 22-point advantage over Republicans (50% to 28%) with independent voters. With roughly 90% of likely Republican and Democratic voters planning to support their party’s respective congressional candidates in 2026, according to Emerson College Polling executive director Spencer Kimball, independents are likely to have outsized influence over November’s elections.

She referred to him as “the guy who consistently calls for the death of all Palestinians,” later defending the comment to Axios that his public support for Israel during its ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank amounts to endorsing a genocide.

On Tuesday at The Heritage Foundation, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Iowa, and former Centers for Disease Control Director Robert Redfield shed light on how health officials and President Joe Biden’s administration sought to suppress the COVID-19 lab leak theory.
Miller-Meeks told the audience that the Biden administration worked backward from its preferred conclusion rather than grapple with the “spillover” outbreak theory.
“Either I was stupid, and everybody else was vastly more intelligent than I was, or people don’t want people to know, because science isn’t consensus, and I think that’s the biggest thing,” Miller-Meeks said in her opening remarks, noting that dissenting opinions on the origins of the virus should have been welcomed rather than suppressed.
