Democratic donors and consultants have been meeting in luxury hotels to analyze the party’s inability to connect with male voters and propose alternative communications strategies. The results, according to the New York Times, have often resembled “anthropological studies of people from faraway places.” One liberal group is planning a $20-million campaign called “Speaking with American Men: A Strategic Plan,” or SAM for short, that will “study the syntax, language and content that gains attention and virality” in masculine-coded heteronormative communities.

Two Secret Service agents were suspended after getting into a physical altercation last week that was captured on video and circulated online.

A Secret Service spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the video, which depicted two female officers getting into a physical fight while on duty. NBC News reported that the incident occurred outside of former President Obama’s home in Washington, D.C.

The spokesperson said the incident — which occurred early last Wednesday — is under internal investigation.

“The U.S. Secret Service is aware of an on-duty altercation that occurred between two Uniformed Division officers at approximately 2:30 a.m. on May 21,” the statement read. “The individuals involved were suspended from duty and this matter is the subject of an internal investigation.”

Donald Trump’s speech at West Point on Saturday was bad, but the president managed to top himself and show off his decline at the sacred Arlington cemetery on Memorial Day.

Trump’s remarks lasted for less than 20 minutes, but they contained mispronounced words, and at times, the president was running his words together, making them difficult to understand.

In one section of his speech, Trump said:

But even for a moment, that freedom is a gift of the highest cost and peace is one at the most precious price. These extraordinary American heroes in there, immense and ultimate sacrifices. They offer only the faintest glimpse at the infinite grace we have received from all who laid down their lives for America over the past 250 years.

We’re gonna have a big, big celebration, as you know, 250 years. In some ways. I’m glad I missed that second term where it was because I wouldn’t be your president for that. Most important of all, in addition, we have the World Cup and we have the Olympics. Can you imagine I missed that four years and now look what I have.

I have everything amazing the way things work out.

God did that. I believe that too.

God did it.

You know, I got the World Cup and I got the, uh, Olympics. The 250 years was not mine. I’d like to take credit, but I got the Olympics. I got the World Cup when I was president. And I said, boy, it’s too bad I won’t be president then. And look what happened. I, I turned out that we’re gonna have a great time, we’re gonna have a great celebration.

But most important of all is the 250th anniversary that blows everything away, including the World Cup and including the Olympics. As far as I’m concerned, in any corner of the cemetery, at any resting place for our war, dead, anywhere on earth, you’ll find untold stories of equal heroism and heartbreak unmatched.

Patriotism and devote.

Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD) said he was denied access in El Salvador to visit Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the suspected MS-13 gang member mistakenly deported by the Trump administration.

Ivey, who represents the congressional district in which Abrego Garcia lived, said he contacted a Salvadoran ambassador to make a request to their government before his trip. Despite that outreach, he added, he was denied access to the prison where Abrego Garcia is being held.

“They knew we were coming, they knew why we were coming, and they know we have the right to do this,” Ivey said in a video posted on X on Monday. “So, they need to just cut the crap, let us get in there and have a chance to see him and talk with him.”

Ivey noted he was told to travel to San Salvador to obtain a permit before he could visit Abrego Garcia. He appeared in the video alongside Abrego Garcia’s attorney and a member of CASA, the Maryland-based union he was part of.

A woman has been arrested in Florida for violently attacking a 72-year-old man in the street because he supports President Donald Trump.

33-year-old Laura Garrett was arrested by the Largo Police Department on Tuesday.

The department released Garrett’s mugshot, showing a woman with blue hair wearing an orange jumpsuit.

She is accused of attacking the man, whom she did not know, at Northeast Park and Paw Place, located at 4630 East Bay Drive in Largo.

Garrett reportedly confronted the unidentified victim because he was wearing a “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) hat.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by FOX 13 Tampa Bay, Garrett then proceeded to demand that the man explain why he supports Trump.

When the victim refused to explain himself, Garrett allegedly physically assaulted him.

During the confrontation, Garrett poured a drink from a can she was holding on the victim’s head and hit him on the back of his head and shoulder area with it, the arrest report said.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has described President Trump as a “monster” for launching a federal investigation against him.

Speaking at a church in Woodlawn, Illinois over the weekend, Johnson said he preferred to hire black people because they are more generous than whites.

This has since led to Department of Justice opening an investigation into Johnson for racial discrimination.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Johnson said that Trump’s investigation was the result of his own racial animus:

As far as, you know, the president’s animus towards women, people of color, working people, we have always known who he has been. This is not a surprise. He’s a monster.

We have the most diverse administration in the history of Chicago, and he is threatened by that.

You can tell when someone is fearful is because they act out. We have a president that is screaming and having tantrums right now because we have an administration that reflects the city of Chicago, but he would much rather have administrations that reflect the country club. Period.

He is most comfortable around people who think and look like him.

Let me just say, based on what the House has passed, our chances of taking back the Senate have just increased because while Republicans claim that their tax scam will lift America across the board. The American people see it’s just plain false.

The polling data shows it. The 0.1% people will get a big tax break. The poorest 20% of Americans actually see their taxes go up. How is that fair? It’s not just taxes, it’s poor. And working class families see the costs of everyday items skyrocket.

Just what they did on the clean energy side will lose millions of jobs and cost people much more on their electricity bills. Families are gonna have to figure out how to find extra money to pay for these energy costs. Families will lose healthcare. Families will lose food benefits. Families will lose jobs, families will lose money.

The reason because the Republicans want a billionaire tax giveaway. And we’re gonna fight this tooth and nail. We know that a lot of Republicans on the Senate side are squirmy about the Medicaid cuts, the disparity in the taxes, the clean energy cuts, et cetera. And we urge everyone who’s listening to this call or who read something in the press or online to make sure that they call their Republican senators and say, don’t vote for this billionaire tax scam.

The Trump administration filed a motion Thursday to end the decades-old legal ruling that established basic standards for the treatment and release of migrant children—a move that immigrant rights advocates say they will challenge.

The Flores Settlement Agreement, which dates back to 1997, requires the government to move migrant children from jail-like detention facilities to state-licensed, child-appropriate facilities as quickly as possible, and to ensure that children are kept in safe and sanitary facilities.

“The fact that the government refuses to be held accountable to even these most basic standards to keep children safe speaks volumes.”

Gov. Bob Ferguson on Tuesday signed into law a controversial bill requiring Washingtonians to apply for a permit – and pay for it – before purchasing a firearm.

Under House Bill 1163, which goes into effect in May 2027, any state resident wishing to purchase a gun must first apply for a permit, then pay a fee, and show documentation of completing a safety training program – including live-fire shooting – within five years.

Per the bill, potential gun buyers will have to obtain a five-year permit through the Washington State Patrol. At the point of purchase, buyers will undergo another background check and wait 10 days before taking possession of the firearm.

The bill passed both chambers of the Legislature on a strict party-line vote, with no Republicans supporting the bill.

Senate Republicans are vowing they will make changes to President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” after it passed the House early Thursday morning.

While the end product is likely to contain sweeping areas of overlap with the proposal negotiated by Speaker Mike Johnson, GOP senators made clear Thursday that the House bill can’t pass without major changes. Some of the member demands are contradictory, with some fiscal hawks demanding beefed-up spending reductions while others want softening of the House’s Medicaid language and to preserve more green-energy incentives.

“I’m hoping now we’ll actually start looking at reality,” said Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.). “I know everybody wants to go to Disney World, but we just can’t afford it.”

Johnson batted down the idea that he would fold under arm-twisting from Trump — much as his House counterparts did. “Listen, in the House, President Trump can threaten to primary [holdouts], and those guys want to keep their seats. I understand the pressure. Can’t pressure me that way.”

President Trump asked an aide to dim the lights of the Oval Office, and then, with a line of reporters in the room, proceeded to ambush the leader of South Africa.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and his delegation watched in stunned silence at footage that Trump believed supported his claims that Ramaphosa’s government was turning a blind eye to violence against white Afrikaners. When Trump identified images of crosses along a road as the marked graves of murdered white farmers, Ramaphosa said he hadn’t seen that before and would find out where it was filmed. The video also showed South African opposition leaders calling for the death of white farmers. Ramaphosa said he condemned those remarks and his political coalition had been built to sideline those calling for violence.

It was another tense confrontation between Trump and a U.S. ally, staged by the White House to air out those tensions in front of the world. Trump flipped through what he said were printed news articles about white farmers being killed. “Those people in many cases are being executed—they happen to be white and most of them happen to be farmers,” Trump said.

President Ramaphosa said that there is a lot of violent crime in the country but Black and white citizens are both targets. “There is criminality in our country. People who do get killed unfortunately through criminal activity are not only white people,” Ramaphosa told Trump.

Per the FBI charging document, Dugan stands accused of two U.S. Code violations: “Obstructing or impeding a proceeding before a department or agency of the United States” and “Concealing an individual to prevent his discovery and arrest.”

Dugan has pleaded not guilty. After her indictment, her attorneys filed a motion to dismiss on the grounds that “she is entitled to judicial immunity for her official acts.”

Elon Musk’s pledge to step back from campaign spending — if he means it — is rippling across the nation’s political landscape.

Some Republicans are worried that they might be losing their whale. Some Democrats fear they are losing their foil.

It matters because Musk injected an unprecedented level of spending into the presidential race and could do the same in November’s Virginia governor’s race and around the country in the midterms.

That was suddenly put in doubt Tuesday, when the Tesla CEO told an interviewer that he’s backing away from political spending after shelling out hundreds of millions of dollars to help Donald Trump win the presidency last year.

“Taking his toys and going home,” said Steve Bannon, a Trump ally who has verbally sparred with Musk.

Musk, the world’s richest man with a net worth estimated at more than $420 billion, announced that he will “do a lot less” political spending, a surprise reversal of his promise to continue to play a major role influencing U.S. elections. By a margin of 215-214, Republicans passed Trump’s tax cuts for the rich. What Speaker Mike Johnson accomplished for his majority was an act of political suicide to give billionaires a massive tax cut.

House Democratic leadership (Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark, and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar) released a statement after the vote:

Today, every single House Democrat voted to stop the largest cuts to Medicaid and food assistance in American history. The GOP Tax Scam rips healthcare and food assistance away from millions of people in order to provide tax cuts to the wealthy, the well-off and the well-connected.

House Republicans promised to lower costs. Instead, Donald Trump’s One Big Ugly Bill will mean millions of families will pay higher premiums, copays and deductibles. Hospitals will close, nursing homes will shut down and communities will suffer. It will take food out of the mouths of children, seniors and veterans at a time when too many families are already struggling to live paycheck to paycheck.

Former FBI director James Comey says that he’s still a bit bewildered over how a seemingly innocent Instagram shot of shells arranged in the sand led to allegations by Donald Trump among others that he was calling for the president’s assassination and to an interview with the Secret Service.

“It’s been a bit of a distraction, honestly,” Comey said with a weary laugh Monday night during an appearance at a Barnes & Noble on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

Comey was promoting “FDR Drive,” a crime novel coming out this week. One of the book’s themes, ironically, is weighing the potential of speech to incite others to violence.

Comey, whom Trump fired in 2017 amid an FBI investigation into potential ties between Russia and Trump’s first presidential campaign, explained Monday that he and his wife, Patrice, had been returning from a walk on the beach last Thursday when they came upon some shells organized in a way that resembled numbers, including “86.”

They speculated over whether it was a home address, or a political message. His wife noted that “86” in some restaurants means they had run out of an ingredient. Comey remembered it was slang for saying something was boring and should be “ditched.”

“And she said, ‘You should take a picture of it.’ So I took a picture of it, and then we walk home and she said, ‘You should really put that on Instagram. It’s kind of a cool thing.’ I said, ‘You’re right. It’s a cool thing,’” he explained.

To many viewers, the numbers seemed to spell out 86 and 47. Merriam-Webster, the dictionary used by The Associated Press, says 86 is slang meaning “to throw out,” “to get rid of” or “to refuse service to.” It notes: “Among the most recent senses adopted is a logical extension of the previous ones, with the meaning of ’to kill.’”

Late Monday, interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba announced assault charges against far-left Congresswoman LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) in relation to a physical confrontation outside an Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) facility.

But through Wednesday morning, ABC’s top news shows — Good Morning America and World News Tonight — had yet to cover it while their competitors on CBS and NBC ran cover for McIver standing up to illegal immigrants.

CBS had one minute and 53 seconds on its flagship shows CBS Mornings and the CBS Evening News. That number balloons to four minute and 49 seconds if the Plus editions of both shows were included.

Tuesday’s CBS Mornings opened with the chaotic scene as McIver, two other House Democrats, and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, followed by co-host Nate Burleson boasting McIver “is strongly disputing the charges.”

Despite having offered years of vociferous coverage of every nook and cranny of January 6 prosecutions, Justice correspondent Scott MacFarlane was up in arms about this prosecution (click “expand”):

We could see those charging documents as early as this morning in this case of 38-year-old Lamonica McIver, a first-term Democrat from New Jersey. The video from earlier this month outside the Delaney Immigration Facility shows the confrontation with federal agents, McIver, a couple other members of Congress, and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. The group was there for a routine inspection of the facility, but after Baraka was arrested, the scuffle ensued. McIver calls this a “purely political prosecution,” and says it was the agents who “created an unnecessary and unsafe confrontation.” The misdemeanor case against Baraka was dropped Monday by the U.S. Attorney, she said, “for the sake of moving forward,” but at the same time the U.S. Attorney announced this assault prosecution of McIver. The Department of Homeland Security argues the group stormed the gates and that no one is above the law, but Democrats are rallying behind McIver. And Gayle, they’re saying this is an attempt by the Trump administration to intimidate members of Congress.

Early voting in, voter ID out as Democrats advance sweeping election bill – Scranton Times-Tribune

A sweeping bill to overhaul the commonwealth’s election laws has passed the Pennsylvania House. Its changes would include creating in-person early voting, giving counties more time to process mail ballots, and requiring counties to use mail ballot drop boxes.

But it doesn’t include one provision that will likely be important to its prospects: a voter ID requirement, something that Republicans, who control the state Senate, have always seen as crucial to any election law deal.

State House leaders in both parties have lately said they are open to a voter ID requirement after years of partisan fights. The chamber even advanced a stand-alone bill, sponsored by two swing-district lawmakers, that would create a lenient voter ID requirement for all in-person voters.

However, a top state House Democrat said that bill was pulled from last week’s voting calendar because some Republicans in the chamber weren’t going to vote for it. Given the limited House Democratic support, the proposal would have been short of the 102 votes needed for final passage.

Several vulnerable House Democrats representing swing districts held intimate meetings with former president Joe Biden at the White House during the same timeframe his senior aides were hard at work concealing his rapidly deteriorating mental acuity from the public. That includes Rep. Biden’s rapidly deteriorating mental acuity was evident to the public and became impossible for the Democratic Party to ignore following his disastrous debate performance in late June. But Gonzalez told a different story to the public following his intimate meetings with the president.

Gonzalez praised Biden’s mental acuity in a Feb. 2024 statement, saying the former president “still seems pretty sharp and focused on the task of the day.” And later, in July, Gonzalez attacked the first House Democrat to call on Biden to drop his reelection bid, saying it was “ironic” that the elderly Rep. “We have a 77-year-old asking an 81-year-old not to run,” said Gonzalez, who represents a toss-up district in southern Texas. “I really believe folks are jumping the gun.”

Maryland Democrat Governor Wes Moore has vetoed a bill that would have created a commission to study and make recommendations regarding reparations for black residents, saying that it is “time to focus on the work itself” rather than another study.

“I applaud the legislature’s work on this bill, and I thank the Black Caucus for their leadership,” Moore wrote in a Friday letter to Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson. “Maryland is proud to be a state with the largest Black Caucus in America, our first Black Attorney General, our first Black Senator, a Black treasurer, and a Black Speaker of the House. We have moved in partnership with leaders across the state to uplift Black families and address racial disparities in our communities. That is the context in which I’ve made this difficult decision. Because while I appreciate the work that went into this legislation, I strongly believe now is not the time for another study. Now is the time for continued action that delivers results for the people we serve.”

Under the bill, the Maryland Reparations Commission would be established to “study and make recommendations relating to appropriate 21 benefits to be offered to individuals impacted by historical inequality,” and issue its final report and recommendations to the governor in 2027.
