The current flag bearer of the de facto “Romania First” party, George Simeon, has finished first in the first round of Romania’s Presidential elections. He won the first round with 41% of the vote to second place Nicusor Dan. He finished with 21% of the total vote. Simeon appears set to win by an even bigger margin of victory than his party leader predecessor, Calin Georgescu, did in December of 2024. That election was cancelled by the EU, and Georgescu banned from running for public office.

Romania’s interim president has appointed a caretaker prime minister, a day after Marcel Ciolacu stepped down following the failure of his coalition’s candidate to make the runoff in a rerun of the presidential election.
Ilie Bolojan signed a decree to appoint Interior Minister Catalin Predoiu of the liberal NLP party to helm the government until a new one can be formed.
The interim post can be held for a maximum of 45 days, granting Predoiu limited executive powers.
The shake-up comes after the coalition’s candidate, Crin Antonescu, came third in Sunday’s first round presidential vote, behind nationalist George Simion and pro-Western Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan.
Simion heads to the second round of the Romanian Presidential Election as the clear favorite.

Pennsylvania lawmakers will consider a package of election reforms including a voter ID requirement and changes to the commonwealth’s vote-by-mail law after a House committee passed the long-debated measures.
Most Democrats have staunchly opposed proposals requiring voters to prove their identities every time they vote but leaders have recently expressed a willingness to negotiate in exchange for support on other measures to modernize Pennsylvania’s election system.
On Tuesday, House Bill 771, sponsored by Rep. Thomas Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) passed with a bipartisan 14-12 vote in the House State Government Committee. Democratic Reps John Inglis of Allegheny County and Nancy Guenst of Montgomery County voted in support.
The committee voted along party lines, however, to approve an omnibus bill that would eliminate ambiguity in Act 77, the law that gave Pennsylvanians the option to vote by mail without an excuse for the first time in 2020.
The vote-by-mail provision has been the subject of numerous lawsuits, including one now before the U.S. Supreme Court, as candidates and parties have argued over how election officials should handle irregularities, such as errors on completed ballots, that are not explicitly addressed.
The bill would make clear that county election officials are required to notify voters if their mail-in ballots have been rejected for the lack of a signature and give the voter an opportunity to “cure” the error.
Among other changes, House Bill 1396 would also give election workers up to a week before Election Day to prepare to count mail-in ballots, a process that has been a bottleneck for election results in parts of the state, providing fodder for election deniers.
Attorneys general in 19 states and Washington, D.C., are challenging cuts to the U.S. Health and Human Services agency, saying the Trump administration’s massive restructuring has destroyed life-saving programs and left states to pick up the bill for mounting health crises.
The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Rhode Island on Monday, New York Attorney General Letitia James said. The attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia signed onto the complaint.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. restructured the agency in March, eliminating more than 10,000 employees and collapsing 28 agencies under the sprawling HHS umbrella into 15, the attorneys general said. An additional 10,000 employees had already been let go by President Donald Trump’s administration, according to the lawsuit, and combined the cuts stripped 25% of the HHS workforce.
Ask Democratic National Committee Vice Chair David Hogg why Democratic lawmakers are heading toward the exits. It is because people like him want to widen the generational and ideological rifts growing within their party.

Thus, President Donald Trump would do well to take a page from one of his illustrious 19th-century predecessors.
According to a Gallup poll published on Thursday, public confidence in congressional Democrats — the party now led by the likes of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, as well as lesser known yet equally radical figures such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, and Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas — has plummeted to a historic low of 25 percent.
For comparison’s sake, the prominent pollster had Democrats’ confidence rating at 34 percent as recently as 2023.
Likewise, shortly after now-former President Joe Biden took office in 2021, that rating stood at 49 percent.
In response to DNC Vice Chairman David Hogg’s latest comments, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said his focus remains on targeting Republican incumbents, not established Democrats in the 2026 midterm elections.
“Here’s the thing,” Jeffries told Jonathan Karl on ABC’s This Week. “I’m gonna really focus on trying to defeat Republican incumbents so we can take back control of the House of Representatives and begin the process of ending this national nightmare that’s being visited upon us by far-right extremism.”
Jeffries’s comment comes as Hogg shared he intends to use his organization, Leaders We Deserve, to spend $20 million to fund younger Democratic candidates running against incumbents in safe blue districts.

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has opened an investigation into Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) over donations made to her 2024 campaign by the Democratic fundraising organization Act Blue.
The FEC began its probe after receiving a complaint from the conservative Coolidge-Reagan Foundation in late March.
The complaint alleges that Crockett received 53 separate donations of $595 from a 73 year old supporter named Randy Best through the Act Blue portal.
However, when one of Crockett’s opponents for 2026 spoke to Best’s wife, she denied that the couple knew anything about donations, raising concerns that the Act Blue donations may have been made by others with donations being given under false names.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a law that will spend $181 million on fire prevention in the state — and $2.8 billion on Medi-Cal, the state Medicaid provider, whose costs have ballooned thanks to his decision to cover illegal aliens.

Fifty-six percent of Americans believe that Musk has too much influence, while only 6% believe he has too little influence, according to the findings of the latest UMass Amherst National Poll.
Similarly, 56% believe both technology companies and Wall Street have too much influence over the government. Fifty-nine percent reported holding the same belief about health insurance companies.
Arizona will be combing its voter registration rolls with an eye to removing non-citizens, which could impact up to 50,000 people now eligible to vote in federal elections.
The state went for President Donald Trump in 2024 after narrowly backing former President Joe Biden in 2020 amid claims of voting irregularities.
After a lawsuit launched by America First Legal, the state has agreed that it will partner with the Department of Homeland Security to review voting rolls to verify that all residents on the rolls are American citizens, documents related to the suit said, according to Newsweek.
The lawsuit was filed last year.
The lawsuit was dismissed on Wednesday after a settlement was reached when the 15 counties being sued agreed “to ask DHS to begin responding to requests … to verify the citizenship of each county’s federal-only voters.”

The North Carolina Supreme Court decided to allow about 60,000 ballots to count in a race for a seat on its own bench, despite those voters never having provided proper identification upon registering.
A unanimous court Friday decided that over 60,000 votes challenged by Republican candidate and appellate judge Jefferson Griffin should remain in the count for the vote total. In a 4-2 split, the court also decided that another roughly 5,500 overseas voters who did not provide identification would be allowed 30 days to fix their ballots, while another 267 voters who have never resided in North Carolina would have their votes removed.

If anyone isn’t sure whether Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar is thwarting efforts to clean up Nevada’s dirty voter rolls, his new bill, AB 534, removes all doubt.
There are two ways for citizens to challenge the eligibility of a voter who has moved from the residence where they are registered to vote — known as “Section 535” and “Section 547.”
Last year, our group, the Pigpen Project, filed thousands of challenges using both sections. In response, Aguilar’s office claimed challenges like ours lacked “personal knowledge” that the voter had moved.
If the post office’s National Change of Address (NCOA) database shows that a voter has permanently moved, Aguilar has declared that such information gleaned from this official government database doesn’t equate to “personal knowledge.” But “personal knowledge” is not defined in the Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS), only in the secretary of state’s implementing regulations. It’s only his opinion. Besides, Section 535 only requires challengers to attest “that he or she has personal knowledge of the facts set forth in the affidavit” (emphasis added).
Some Republican lawmakers are deeply concerned about President Donald Trump’s tariff gambit for more reasons than one. Many have argued that using tariffs will only raise prices for American consumers.
However, others are worried about something else: Maintaining political power.
