Identifying a new species is not always straightforward. Scientists usually rely on physical traits that separate one species from another, but in nature those differences do not always fall into neat categories. Sometimes two different species look almost identical. These are called cryptic species. In other cases, a single species can vary so much in appearance that it seems like several different species instead. The challenge becomes even greater when both patterns show up at the same time.
Herpetologist Dr. Chan Kin Onn (previously at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, Singapore, now with the University of Kansas Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum, USA) led research on a pit viper from Myanmar that seemed to be both similar to and distinct from its closest relatives. The work was published in the open access journal ZooKeys, building on an earlier genomic study in Systematic Biology that had already indicated the snakes represented a separate evolutionary lineage.
“Asian pit vipers of the genus Trimeresurus are notoriously difficult to tell apart, because they run the gamut of morphological variation. Some groups contain multiple species that look alike, while others may look very different but are actually the same species,” they say.

“BREAKING: There are some reports Trump has been taken to Walter Reed Hospital,” the captions of multiple Facebook posts sharing the video read. The earliest we found was posted April 19 and the latest was posted April 21.
The footage isn’t real. It contains signs that it was made with artificial intelligence.
We contacted the Walter Reed hospital’s communications office, which said that the logo shown in the video is not the hospital’s official logo, and the signage is inconsistent with that at the hospital.

Neanderthals are also continuing their own journey through history, and the latest scientific study conducted at Stajnia Cave in Poland is bringing an exciting new dimension to it. For the first time, scientists have been able to reconstruct what appears to be the oldest Neanderthal population in Central-Eastern Europe, thereby giving us more information about how these prehistoric humans were able to adapt to and survive in the wild. Through the use of DNA from cave deposits dating back over 80,000 years, scientists have managed to piece together the information regarding this group of Neanderthals.
This discovery is based on an in-depth examination of DNA taken from the Neanderthal tooth discovered in Stajnia Cave. Using highly sophisticated paleogenomic methodology, the scientists have successfully analysed the mitochondrial DNA and came to the conclusion that the Neanderthal was from a branch genetically connected with their contemporaries who lived in the Caucasus area.As reported in the article “First multi-individual Neanderthal mitogenomes from north of the Carpathians,” published by Scientific Reports, this discovery implies significant migration or at least contacts of the populations living over a large territory of Eurasia. As the researchers write:“The genetic affinities of the Stajnia individual imply connections between the populations of Central European and Caucasus Neanderthals.”In other words, there were no isolated communities of Neanderthals in Europe.

So far, America has remained ahead in the new space race. But its biggest rival is making continual steps to catch up. China announced another step in that direction with the unveiling of its first ever reusable five-meter-wide composite propulsion module, announced in a press release on April 11th.
The module was designed by the China Aerospace and Technology Corporation (CASC), the primary state contractor for the Chinese space program. Specifically, it was developed at the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), which is also known as the First Academy of the CASC. It marks the largest integrated composite structure ever manufactured domestically for China’s aerospace sector. The first prototype was completed in just seven months, from initial design to delivery, underscoring the rapid development timeline.
Composites are becoming a critical feature of modern launch systems. Traditional metal components simply weigh too much. The more structural weight a launch vehicle has to carry into orbit, the less cargo or fuel it is able to carry due to the tyranny of the rocket equation. Composites are significantly lighter while still having the physical properties of metal, allowing for more payloads, or, crucially, more fuel for reentry burns.
