Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau are amongst 171 flotilla activists deported by Israel to Greece and Slovakia on Monday after a failed bid to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza last week.

The activists were detained by Israel in an operation which started last Wednesday night after its navy intercepted 44 civilain boats carrying a symbolic amount of aid to Gaza.

The flotilla’s goal had been to break Israel’s long-standing blockade of the Strip and to bring crucial aid into the war-ravaged enclave.

“The deportees are citizens of Greece, Italy, France, Ireland, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Austria, Luxembourg, Finland, Denmark, Slovakia, Switzerland, Norway, the UK, Serbia, and the United States,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry wrote on X, attaching photograhs of the released activists in white T-shirts and grey sweatpants.

Several activists were already released over the weekend by Israel to Turkey, Spain and Italy. They spoke to reporters about the harsh conditions Thunberg and other prisoners were subjected to. Earlier, Swiss and Spanish activists said they were subject to inhumane conditions.

“We were detained in a maximum security prison where there was no rule of law, they didn’t respect any of our rights,” former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau claimed.

Prime numbers are sometimes called math’s “atoms” because they can be divided by only themselves and 1. For two millennia, mathematicians have wondered if the prime numbers are truly random, or if some unknown pattern underlies their ordering. Recently number theorists have proposed several surprising conjectures on prime patterns—in particular, probabilistic patterns that show up in large groups of the mathematical atoms.

The patterns in the primes trace back to an 1859 hypothesis involving the legendary Riemann zeta function. Mathematician Bernhard Riemann derived a function that counts the number of primes up to a number x. It includes three main ingredients: a smooth estimate, a set of corrective terms coming from the Riemann zeta function, and a small error term.

Much has been written about the Riemann zeta function, but the most important thing to know is that it provides a correction to the smooth estimate. To do so, it takes on a wavy pattern, sometimes raising the count, sometimes lowering it. These corrective oscillations are determined by the locations of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function. In fact, the celebrated Riemann hypothesis claims that all such zeros lie on a “critical line” where the real part equals 1⁄2.

Security forces were deployed around polling stations nationwide. Incumbent President Ahmed al-Sharaa will appoint 70 members to the assembly, the remaining 140 will be voted on by subcommittees, overseen by 11-person Supreme Committees, who were appointed by al-Sharaa.

The White House has announced that it will be looking into the case of a child killer who was freed from prison after less than a decade in prison. Ronald Exantus, 42, stabbed an entire family in 2015, killing a 6-year-old boy. Today, he is walking free after being released 13 years early.
