US President Donald Trump has said the detention of a pro-Palestinian activist in New York last week will be the “first arrest of many”, as his administration cracks down on those who participated in university campus protests against Israel and the war in Gaza.

Mahmoud Khalil was arrested on Saturday over his role in the protest movement at Columbia University. The former graduate student is currently being held at an immigration facility in Louisiana.

Although he has not been accused of a crime related to his activism, the US government has indicated that it wants to deport Khalil, who is a legal US resident.

A federal judge in New York said the 30-year-old could not be deported while the court considers a legal challenge brought by his lawyers.

Bipartisan bill would cut funding to universities that boycott Israel

Republican Rep. Virginia Foxx and Democrat Rep. Josh Gottheimer introduced a bill Tuesday to withhold federal funding from universities that divest from companies with ties to Israel.

The “Protect Economic Freedom Act” would mandate that universities submit yearly certifications to the Department of Education proving they are not involved in any “commercial boycotts dictated by those in the boycott-sanction-divest (BDS) movement,” according to a Committee on Education and the WorkForce news release.

The bill would also require the U.S. Department of Education to “make publicly available a list of all institutions that fail to certify.”

“Enough is enough. Appeasing the antisemitic mobs on college campuses threatens the safety of Jewish students and faculty, and it undermines the relationship between the U.S. and one of our strongest allies,” Foxx (pictured) stated in the news release.

Gottheimer condemned “the antisemitic BDS movement,” stating that its goal “is to annihilate the democratic State of Israel, America’s critical ally in the global fight against terror.”

Protesters demanding divestment from Israel occupied and damaged Morrill Hall, resulting in multiple arrests and a university-wide safety alert

Pro-Palestinian protesters took over a University of Minnesota building Monday, leading to 11 arrests.

Protesters “occupied and barricaded” Morrill Hall before the University of Minnesota Police Department began making arrests around 5:40 PM, The Minnesota Daily reported.

The university sent out a SAFE-U EMERGENCY alert around 4:40 p.m. stating, “Protestors have entered Morrill Hall on the East Bank, causing property damage and restricting entrance and exit from the building.”

“If you are currently in Morrill Hall and able to safely exit the building, please do so immediately. Others are advised to avoid this area until further notice,” the alert read.

Protesters blocked entry to the building with chairs, tables, filing cabinets, and bike racks. They locked the doors with bike locks and damaged the administrative building by spray painting and smashing windows, the Minnesota Daily reported.

Anti-Israel student protesters at the University of Minnesota stormed a campus building Monday afternoon using furniture to barricade exit doors, trapping staff inside and demanding divestment from the Jewish state.

Student protesters assembled on a campus lawn before a group stormed Morrill Hall around 4 p.m. Once inside, masked individuals spray-painted security camera lenses and smashed windows, creating significant damage, according to a university statement.

Given the ongoing property damage and because several staff members in the building could not exit through the barricaded doors, the University of Minnesota Police Department was called to the scene and arrested almost a dozen individuals.
