The Belga News Agency reported today that The Belgian Advisory Committee on Bioethics released an advisory report that supports euthanasia for people with advanced dementia.

Approval for euthanasia, which is killing a person by lethal poison, has moved from the terminally ill, to the chronically ill, to people with mental illness, to children and newborns and now to the incompetent.

Clearly The Belgian Advisory Committee have bought into a eugenic ideology based on the belief that some human lives are not worth living, and can be killed.

The Belga News Agency reported that:

At present, someone with advanced dementia cannot legally obtain euthanasia in Belgium. The current law requires that a person be mentally competent when requesting euthanasia, or that a prior living will or advance directive has been drawn up that applies when the patient is in a state of irreversible loss of consciousness – a coma.

This means that people with dementia can currently only request euthanasia if they are still sufficiently mentally competent. In 2024, 56 people with dementia in our country received euthanasia.

Poland’s Lower Chamber of the Parliament, the Sejm, has just elected a former member of the Communist Party during the Soviet occupation and a little beyond it. His name is Wlodzimierz Czarzasty. The election has anti-communist Poles concerned the communists are attempting to reclaim the country from within.

Polish government makes ex-communist Parliament speaker – American Thinker

Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York City mayor surprised lots of Americans: How could a socialist get elected chief executive of America’s biggest city?  He did, however, get applause from the Polish left.  Maybe Americans should also learn how the new speaker of the lower house of the Polish Parliament is an ex-communist.

Wlodzimierz Czarzasty was elected speaker of the Sejm — the lower chamber of Poland’s parliament — November 18.

Czarzasty’s background is concerning.  Born in 1960, he joined the Polish United Workers’ Party — the Polish Communist Party — in 1983.  He stayed in the party until 1990 — i.e., until after the fall of communism in Poland.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has warned the Western Balkan country faces a major crisis as its largest oil refinery prepares to shut down unless US sanctions authorities approve an operating license by Thursday.

The Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS) refinery is currently operating in “warm circulation” — a reduced-capacity mode — and has four days until complete shutdown unless approval comes from the US Office of Foreign Assets Control, Vučić said in an address to the nation.

“It will take 14 days to restart, but in reality it will be more than that. Count on 20 days or more,” he said. “That means the refinery would not be operating until the New Year and even after that.”

A Sabotage Attack That Crossed a Line

Last weekend, an explosion ripped through railway tracks near Warsaw, Poland, tearing open a NATO-linked supply route feeding Ukraine’s war effort. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the explosion an “unprecedented act of sabotage,” as early reports from the scene confirmed that military aid shipments moved along the same corridor.

STORY-AT-A-GLANCE

  1. The proposal to institutionalize informal relationships in Poland would not solve any real social problem – all the necessary legal instruments for such relationships already exist.
  2. In Western countries, interest in same-sex civil partnerships is extremely low, which proves that it does not stem from a genuine social need but from an ideological agenda.
  3. Granting unmarried couples marital privileges constitutes an injustice toward married couples who raise children and bear the social costs of procreation.
  4. The goal of the draft bill announced by the governing coalition is not so much “protecting relationships” as the weakening and relativization of the institutions of marriage and the family.
  5. Introducing an alternative to marriage leads to a further decline in the birth rate and a blurring of the concept of the family.
  6. This is only the first step toward granting same-sex couples the right to adopt children, and then toward recognizing all forms of cohabitation, including “multi-parent” families, where a child may have, for example, three “fathers.”

BUDAPEST, Hungary — BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Thousands of Hungarians congregated on the streets of Budapest on Thursday in a show of force on behalf of their leader, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who six months ahead of parliamentary elections looks set to face the most competitive ballot in his 15 years in power.

The gathering, dubbed a “peace march” by organizers, came on Hungary’s Oct. 23 national holiday, a remembrance of a failed anti-Soviet uprising in 1956 that was crushed by the Red Army. Marchers shouted slogans backing Orbán and his message that Hungary is at risk of becoming directly involved in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

After four long years in the political wilderness, Andrej Babiš returns to presumably lead the Czech Republic after his blowout victory. In neighboring Hungary, Viktor Orbán was jubilant, celebrating the victory of his ally, while in Slovakia, Robert Fico also toasted to Babis’ huge win.

Orbán and Fico are grizzled veterans of the political wars within their own countries, and now Babis is being welcomed back into the fold. One cannot help but think back to the famous “Hangover” scene.
Orbán, long in the driver’s seat in Hungary, with a tired Fico smiling warily from the backseat, still recovering from an assassination attempt that nearly killed him last year, and Babis fist-pumping from the passenger seat. At least that is one way to imagine Babis’ comeback victory.

Hungarian media is also doing the victory rounds, with Magyar Nemzet writing that Babis’ “return will further strengthen the influence of patriotic leaders in the European Union.” The paper further wrote that “his result could create another opportunity to increase the influence of the V4 and Patriots in Europe.”

Ukraine is interested in influencing Hungarian national elections in April, said Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in a new video posted to his Facebook page.

He points to work done by Ukrainians in creating an app for the rival Tisza Party, which is the main opposition facing Orbán during April national elections.

“It is clear what Ukraine’s interest is in the Hungarian parliamentary election, and it is clear who and through what they want to act in line with this interest,” said Szijjártó.

He added that “if anyone had any doubts about whether the Ukrainians would interfere in next year’s Hungarian parliamentary election, they could be sure that the Ukrainians are strongly interested in influencing the outcome of the Hungarian parliamentary election.”

The foreign minister is referencing a data leak that showed that individuals connected to Ukraine were behind the creation of an app for the Tisza party. The leak affected approximately 18,000 users of the party’s mobile app. Among the data leaked was that of one of its admins, a Ukrainian developer, Myroslav Tokar, who works for app development company PettersonApps.

BELGRADE, Serbia — Thousands joined protest marches in several Serbian towns on Wednesday reflecting persistent resistance to autocratic President Aleksandar Vucic’s rule despite a government crackdown.

Crowds gathered to mark 11 months since a concrete canopy collapsed in a northern Serbian city that killed 16 people and triggered a major anti-government movement.

Protesters believe that the crash at the renovated train station in Novi Sad resulted from graft-fueled negligence in construction projects. The building’s renovation was part of a wider railway overhaul with Chinese companies.

The rallies took place in 16 major cities and towns, including the capital of Bratislava.

They latest wave of protests has been fueled by a trip by Fico to China where he met Russian President Vladimir Putin for the third time since the Russian all-out invasion of Ukraine. A package of austerity measures recently approved by the government further angered the protesters.

The government says the measures are necessary to cut a budget deficit that at 5.3% of GDP was the second highest last year among the countries using the common European currency, the euro. The deficit is expected to surpass 5% this year, exceeding the limit of 3% required by the European Union.

The measures include increases in health and social insurance, income tax for higher earners, and value added tax on some food products, as well as a possible reduction of national holidays.

Labor unions and other critics charged ordinary people will be hit most while businesses complain the measures do not include anything to boost the economy.

“The Slovaks are fed up with that,” Michal Šimečka, the head of the Progressive Slovakia party told the crowd at the Freedom Square in Bratislava.

Poland’s State Protection Service (SOP) has neutralised a drone flying that was flying over sensitive government locations in Warsaw, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in a post on X.

Two Belarusian citizens were detained in connection with the incident and police have launched an investigation into the incident, Tusk said.

The incident comes at a time of heightened regional tensions following a string of airspace violations.

Poland says its airspace was violated in the early hours of Wednesday by a record 19 drones, believed to be from Russia.

In response, the Armed Forces of Ukraine said it would send a team to Poland to provide anti-drone training.

The Polish government has traditionally been a staunch supporter of Ukraine’s war effort.

Total support to Ukraine from Warsaw totals approximately €3.3 billion, in both military and humanitarian assistance.

Thousands rally in Serbia and accuse police of brutality at anti-government demonstrations – The Seattle Times

Thousands of student-led protesters chanted slogans against Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic at a rally in downtown Belgrade on Monday, accusing police of brutality during recent anti-government demonstrations that have shaken his populist rule.

The protesters demanded that police officers responsible for excessive use of force during months of unrest be punished, including for alleged rape threats against a female student.

The protests started in November when a concrete canopy collapsed at a train station in Serbia’s north, killing 16 people. The disaster ignited an anti-corruption movement led by university students alleging graft-fueled negligence as its cause.

Student Nikolina Sindjelic, who was detained last month during the protests, said she was beaten and sexually harassed during her detention. Sindjelic told the rally that the “entire state system has been directed against its own citizens.”

“They (government) beat us because they are afraid of us,” Sindjelic said in a speech outside the headquarters of a special police unit, whose commander she accused of rape threats. “They have hit us and they will hit us because they know it is all over (for them).”

Conservative MEP says Tusk surrendered on Mercosur deal– rmx.news

Last week, the European Commission adopted the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement, but to enter into force, it must be approved by the EU Parliament and member states in a vote at the EU Council.

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Wednesday that Poland would, of course, vote against it, but he also noted there would be insufficient votes to block the agreement, reports Do Rzeczy.

Ratification of the EU-Mercosur agreement requires the consent of the European Parliament and 15 states representing at least 65% of the EU population. Therefore, to reject the agreement, a so-called blocking minority—a coalition of at least four states representing 35% of the EU population—is necessary.

Law and Justice (PiS) MEP Waldemar Buda says Donald Tusk has simply waved a “white flag” on the matter.

Months of protests in Serbia reached a new intensity Wednesday night as riot police intervened to separate rival demonstrations of anti-government protesters and supporters of President Aleksandar Vucic. The president once again accused unnamed foreign powers of orchestrating the protests, which first began after the deadly collapse of a subway station sparked accusations of widespread government corruption.

Supporters of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) threw flares and firecrackers at anti-government protesters in Novi Sad on Wednesday evening, prompting police to intervene to end the standoff, a major escalation of nine-month-long protests in Serbia.

The student-led protests in Serbia first started in November after a train station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad, killing 16 people and triggering accusations of corruption in state infrastructure projects.

Protests have since drawn hundreds of thousands of people, shaking President Aleksandar Vucic’s firm grip on power. His supporters have recently started organising counter-demonstrations, fuelling fears of possible violence.

Poland is set to have more tanks by 2030 than the U.K., Germany, France and Italy combined, after Warsaw signed another multi-billion-euro deal with a South Korean defense company to procure additional K2 tanks.

On Friday, Poland signed an agreement worth over $6 billion with Hyundai Rotem for 180 K2 battle tanks. This is the country’s second major deal with the South Korean company after the first was struck in 2022, also for 180 K2 tanks.

The new agreement will take Poland’s total number of tanks to 1,100 tanks by 2030, including 61 produced domestically.

This would give Warsaw more tanks than the combined total of the U.K., Germany, France and Italy, who are expected to field around 950 tanks by 2030.

Only two NATO member states—Turkey and Greece—will have more tanks than Poland, with 2,238 and 1,344 respectively.

The new Polish-South Korean deal comes as Warsaw and its NATO allies continue to bolster their defenses in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Poland has signed a new contract to acquire an additional 180 K2 main battle tanks from South Korea, with the deal marking the first delivery of tanks in the Polonized K2PL configuration.

The agreement, finalized on Aug. 1 at the Bumar-Łabędy plant in Gliwice, was signed by General Artur Kuptel, head of the Armaments Agency, and Yongbae Lee, president of Hyundai Rotem, the South Korean manufacturer of the tanks.

As reported by Interia Biznes, the signing ceremony was attended by Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back. Kosiniak-Kamysz called the moment “a great history unfolding before our eyes” and emphasized that the Polish arms industry is poised to become a key engine of the national economy.

“This contract means the development of the arms industry, new jobs, and opportunities. Today, the entire government and local government are committed to building security,” he said. He also praised the K2 tanks, citing strong reviews from Polish soldiers, and reaffirmed NATO’s expectation for Poland to build competencies in armored warfare. “Poland is fulfilling this task diligently,” he added.

Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), told BGNES that Bulgaria has met the necessary criteria for joining the eurozone. She stated that Bulgaria’s progress should be reflected in the upcoming convergence report, which is expected to assess the country’s readiness for entry into the eurozone positively.

Georgieva emphasized that Bulgaria has been operating under a currency board since 1997, with the lev pegged to the euro since 1999, effectively placing the country within the eurozone in practice. Now, she noted, Bulgaria will take the final step to become a full legal member of the eurozone.

Commenting on President Rumen Radev’s decision to propose a referendum on the timing of Bulgaria’s eurozone entry, and his subsequent referral of the issue to the Constitutional Court, Georgieva stated this is within the president’s rights. She clarified that the IMF does not weigh in on such matters, focusing solely on the facts – namely, that Bulgaria has met the eurozone entry criteria.

SOFIA, Bulgaria — Bulgaria is close to realizing its decades-old goal of joining the euro currency union and deepening ties with the more prosperous countries of Western Europe. But the government faces a populist backlash against the shared currency on the eve of a key decision by European Union authorities.

Fears of inflation, poverty and the unknown are mingling with disinformation spread on social media that aims to turn people against the euro. The discontent tracks with increased support for populist and anti-EU parties across Europe, which is exploited by nationalist and pro-Russian politicians in a country that remains one of Europe’s poorest and most afflicted with corruption.

“Adopting the euro will make us feel the threshold of poverty. After all, prices will be in euros,” said 78-year-old retiree Tanya Ignatova.

“Bulgaria is not ready for the euro. Someday we may be ready, but not now,” said another retiree, Mario Georgiev.

Several thousand people rallied against the euro in the capital on Saturday, urging a referendum on whether to transition from the lev currency to the euro. The head of the pro-Russian Varazhdane party, Kostadin Kostadinov, told the crowd that “Bulgaria has risen and declared: Freedom, we choose the Bulgarian lev!”
