In Catalonia the Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) of Salvador Island he won the regional elections with 27,9 percent of the votes. With this historic result, the socialists could regain the government after more than a decade, provided they obtain the support of the independent party Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) and Comuns-Sumar, thanks to which PSC would reach the seats necessary for a majority absolute. A scenario that is not easy for Illa at the moment, after the outgoing president and leader of ERC, Aragonese pears, confirmed that his party will not facilitate the investiture of the socialist nor will it participate “in operations that require an agreement” between United for Catalonia (JxCat) and the socialists. Aragones, who following the disappointing electoral result has the desire to abandon politics – without giving up his seat in the Catalan Parliament – in fact, underlined that “it is up to the two parties to manage the situation that has arisen after the elections”.
The Catalan Parliament, meanwhile, must be established by June 10, just one day after the European elections. For the investiture session, the candidate for president of the region will have to obtain the support of 68 councilors in the first vote and, in case of rejection, a simple majority in the second vote two days later. If no candidate is elected within two months, however, Parliament will be automatically dissolved and new elections will immediately return, to be held within 47 days of being convened. The spokesperson of the Catalan socialists, Nuria Parlon, confirmed that Illa’s intention is to lead the next executive either through an agreement with the progressive forces (ERC and Comunes-Sumar) or with a single-party government by reaching specific agreements with the other parties represented in Parliament. If the tripartite agreement (PSC, ERC and Comunes) is not reached, the Catalan socialists have already made it clear that they will dialogue with all political forces to reach the majority necessary for the success of Illa’s investiture, including the party of Carles Puigdemont.
