PIERMONT, NY – Tonight, workers at a construction site on S. Piermont Ave in Piermont, adjacent to the Post Office, uncovered a significant environmental issue. The site, which had previously been home to a gas station, was found to be contaminated with oil. During the demolition process, an oil spill was discovered, leading to oil being drained into the nearby creek via hoses.
The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) was alerted and is currently on site alongside hazmat teams and the local fire department. Efforts are underway to contain the spill, but the creek remains slick with oil. The DEC will continue its investigation and response tomorrow.
Alexis Starke, a local resident, reported that the site had a concrete slab placed over the former gas station, which was removed by the current construction crew, revealing the oil contamination. “The DEC will be back tomorrow,” Starke said, indicating that the issue has been ongoing for several days.
