‘The reality is that in the Supreme Court we have a code of ethics that is really more loophole than law’ says James J. Sample, Professor of Law at Hofstra University and judicial ethics expert. He was speaking to FRANCE 24’s Monte Francis about accusations levelled against Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito of having displayed a ‘Stop The Steal’ symbol on his lawn, adopted by Trump supporters seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Mr. Sample warns that Justice Alito’s actions “undermine the entire enterprise of separation of powers, of an independent judicial branch, and it calls into question the legitimacy of the rulings that come from that branch.” He asserts that the “rule of law’ is at stake: “The judicial branch depends on the public having faith in its rulings for the legitimacy of those rulings and for those rulings to be followed’.”
