After 29 days without seeing Pope Francis, the Holy See Press Office published the first photo of Francis since his hospitalization began on February 14. The photograph was taken at an angle slightly from behind. It showed the pope wearing an alb and a violet stole—the liturgical color of Lent—facing the altar in the chapel of the Roman hospital where he is being treated for double pneumonia.
“This morning, Pope Francis concelebrated Holy Mass in the chapel of the apartment on the tenth floor of Gemelli Hospital,” stated the March 16 communiqué from the Holy See Press Office. Before the photo, the Vatican had already released a low-quality audio recording March 6 in which the pope thanked the faithful who were praying the rosary for his recovery in St. Peter’s Square.
