Kaiser Permanente will stop performing gender transition surgeries on patients under the age of19 beginning in August due to pressure from the Trump administration.
“As the legal and regulatory environment for gender-affirming care continues to evolve, we must carefully consider the significant risks being created for health systems, clinicians, and patients under the age of 19 seeking this care,” Kaiser Permanente told the Washington Times in a statement.
“After significant deliberation and consultation with internal and external experts including our physicians, we’ve made the difficult decision to pause surgical treatment for patients under the age of 19 in our hospitals and surgical centers.”
The announcement comes as children’s activist Chris Elston, known as Billboard Chris, released the contents of what was allegedly an email from Kaiser Permanente CEO Greg Adams to other executives, in which he said that pressure from the Trump administration led to the change.
Adams specifically noted Trump’s executive order, which is aimed at halting the surgical mutilation of children, as well as inquiries made to hospitals by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and regulatory changes such as by the Federal Trade Commission.
