President Donald Trump said Wednesday he expects to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year, signaling a renewed push for direct diplomacy despite Pyongyang publicly rejecting the prospect of a meeting.
“I get along with him very well,” Trump told reporters during a White House construction tour. “I expected to meet with him later this year. Yeah, I will be.”
Trump offered no date or location for a potential meeting and declined to say whether he and Kim had recently exchanged letters.
North Korea, however, pushed back on the prospect while acknowledging that the personal relationship between the two leaders remains intact.
“The relationship between the two leaders remains excellent,” Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, said in a statement carried by state media. “However, the U.S.’s hostile policies toward the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea haven’t changed.”
