Volodymyr Zelensky said he had an “important conversation” with the US President Donald Trump, shortly after the polls closed in Russia. Ukrainian leader said he agreed to meet with the US president at the UN General Assembly in New York next week, and the talks could “change a lot”.
He wrote in a post: “There is diplomatic momentum.” Ukraine‘s president said there are “ideas for de-escalation steps and addressing fundamental security issues. We are working together with the American team and are ready to take really serious steps.”
Efforts are under way to restart direct peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow, with Russia indicating that negotiations could resume as early as October under US-backed mediation.
Previous discussions stalled over the winter and were later put on hold during the conflict involving Iran.
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who have also played roles in diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, are making a renewed attempt to help advance a settlement to the war in Ukraine.
