EXCERPT:
A Russian warplane crashed in flames in the country’s Far East today killing at least six of the crew. Initial reports said there were “two survivors” who were rushed to hospital, said reports.
Initial reports said the stricken plane was a Tu-95MS bomber, capable of carrying Russian nuclear missiles, but there was no initial confirmation. Earlier reports claimed it was a Tu-154. The Russian Defence Ministry later confirmed that a Tu-95MS crashed. The Tu-95MS has been used regularly to fire missiles at Ukraine. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear. The crash was more than 3,000 miles from Ukraine. The AMK Mapping Telegram channel claimed three out of four engines failed “simultaneously, right after take-off”.
It added: “That happening practically guarantees the crew is killed, as there is no time for parachuting to the ground, which is another potential sign of sabotage.”
The plane was seen engulfed in flames. The aircraft was from Russia’s Ukrainka Air Group, an airbase located in Seryshevsky District of the remote Amur Region.
The Ukrainka airfield is home to the command of the 6952nd Guards Sevastopol-Berlin Red Banner Air Base, which operates Tu-95MS strategic missile-carrying bombers.
