“Accurate SSN records prevent fraud across federal programs and support the proper administration of benefits,” Commissioner Frank Bisignano said in a statement.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) under President Trump has announced that it will be conducting the largest clean-up of SSNs in its history. “The Social Security Number database is our country’s books and records. The database’s accuracy is essential to maintaining integrity of government services for citizens. Accurate SSN records prevent fraud across federal programs and support the proper administration of benefits,” Commissioner Frank Bisignano said in a statement.
“This is the first time SSA has undertaken an effort of this scale, and I am proud of the work we have done to strengthen the foundation of identity data relied upon throughout government and the economy.”
The SSA said that approximately 15 percent or around 50 million of all active SSNs have been corrected across 330 million American citizens and 390 million records. SSNs are referred to be agencies in the federal government and in states to verify identities and prevent improper payments in Social Security fraud. During the clean-up, the SSA added records of 17 million deaths that were previously lacking in the system.
