Arjun Aravind of Acton has been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of assault and battery on a household or family member, two counts of assault and battery, use of a vehicle without authority, and theft of a motor vehicle in connection with the deaths of his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, and his 45-year-old mother, Sudha Venkatesan, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Acton Police Chief Douglas Sturniolo.

Israeli Military Tightens Grip on Hezbollah’s Underground ‘Nerve Center’ in South Lebanon legalinsurrection.com

EXCERPT:

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has intensified its encirclement of Hezbollah terrorists holed up inside an underground tunnel network in southern Lebanon, recent Israeli and Lebanese news reports indicate.

The Israeli military closed in on the strategic terrorist tunnel complex in June, but halted its advance following a 15-point memorandum endorsed by President Donald Trump. According to Lebanese media reports, the terrorists have since used the U.S.-backed ceasefire as cover to smuggle in weapons and supplies.

The Ali al-Taher ridge tunnel network, located near the Crusader-era Beaufort Castle, is widely regarded as Hezbollah’s “nerve center” in southern Lebanon. The Israeli security think tank, Alma Center, describes the tunnel complex as “a major center of power that Hezbollah invested significant efforts over time to preserve and defend.”

This “massive strategic underground infrastructure complex,” believed to be built with Iranian and North Korean expertise, acts “as the main headquarters of the Badr Unit,” Hezbollah’s main terrorist formation operating in southern Lebanon, the Alma Center noted in a report published in June 2026.

Doctors File Lawsuit to Stop Illinois’ New Assisted Suicide Law www.lifenews.com

EXCERPT:

For more than 40 years, Dr. Mary Keen Kirchoff has dedicated her career to caring for the most vulnerable—the disabled, the elderly. She became a doctor to heal, not to help her patients die.

Starting on September 12, the State of Illinois will order her to push suicide on her patients.

Illinois’s new assisted suicide law makes three demands of every doctor in the state:

• Tell patients about the “benefits” of ending their own lives—even patients who never asked.

• Refer them to someone willing to help them die.

• Falsify a death certificate to hide what really happened.

Mundane DOJ Memo On Post Office Gun Bans Is Actually Bigger Deal Than You Think dailycaller.com
News Source
EXCERPT:

The Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) informed Attorney General Todd Blanche Wednesday that under current law, firearms were not banned in post offices under a broad exception covering many who carry concealed.

Federal district courts have issued conflicting rulings, with the Trump administration previously electing to drop an appeal of a district court ruling that found the ban unconstitutional after the Supreme Court’s Wolford decision. In the memo, the OLC advised Blanche that the provisions of 18 USC 930, one of the more commonly used statutes to justify a ban on carrying guns in United States Postal Service (USPS) buildings, contained an exemption that applied to those who lawfully carry firearms for lawful purposes including self-defense self-defense, removing the threat of criminal prosecution for having a gun inside a post office or on USPS property.

CALI, Colombia: Hopes of finding more survivors from the powerful earthquake that rocked Colombia early this week were fading on Thursday (Aug 13) as rescue workers narrowed their searches, while families in the worst-hit areas waited for news of missing relatives.

In Cali, the country’s third-largest city, crews have turned their attention from a search-and-rescue effort to debris removal at most sites, a sign the disaster response was entering a grimmer phase after the crucial first 72 hours.

The 7.4-magnitude quake struck shortly after 7:30am local time on Monday (8:30pm, Singapore time), toppling apartment blocks, damaging homes, schools and hospitals and sending residents into the streets across western Colombia, home to the country’s coffee farms.

At least 265 people were killed by the quake and around 500 others are still missing, authorities said on Wednesday afternoon.

Texas Democrat James Talarico: Securing the Border Is an ‘Atrocity’ slaynews.com
News Source
EXCERPT:

Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Texas state Rep. James Talarico (D-Austin) is facing renewed scrutiny after past comments resurfaced in which he accused Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of committing “atrocities” and “hunting people” over border enforcement efforts.

The remarks, made during a 2023 podcast appearance, have resurfaced as Talarico attempts to position himself as a “border security” Democrat while seeking statewide office in Texas.

Critics argue the comments highlight a sharp contrast between Talarico’s current campaign messaging and his previous rhetoric on illegal immigration.

Talarico Compared Abbott’s Border Policies to ‘Atrocities’

Appearing on the Texas in Focus podcast in July 2023, Talarico condemned Abbott’s border security initiatives, including the use of floating barriers and razor wire designed to deter illegal crossings.

“I think Greg Abbott’s border stunts have now become atrocities,” Talarico said.

Republican Ken Paxton holds a one-point lead over Democrat James Talarico in the 2026 U.S. Senate race in Texas, according to a new Emerson College Polling/Nexstar Media survey of likely voters released Thursday.

The poll found 47% of respondents support pro-life Paxton while 46% support pro-abortion Talarico. Five percent remain undecided and 2% support someone else.

The survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted August 9-10 and has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

“The race for U.S. Senate in Texas is sharply divided by age: voters under 50 favor Talarico by 15 points, 53% to 38%, while those over 50 break for Paxton by 11 points, 53% to 42%,” said Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling.

Paxton’s stronger showing among voters over 50 underscores continued support for the Republican in a state where traditional pro-life values and the protection of life remain central concerns for many older Texans.

“I look forward to the WNBA honoring its stated principles. See you at training camp.”

Amid controversy surrounding who can and should play in the Women’s National Basketball Association, former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom has declared himself to be an eligible prospect. The announcement challenges the assertions of WNBA coaches and some players who say that trans women, also known as men, should be able to compete on women’s sports teams.

In a video, Freedom said “after careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines, I am officially declaring myself a WNBA prospect. If simply declaring who you are is all that’s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA.”

“My team and I have carefully examined the WNBA’s eligibility criteria and governing framework surrounding self-identification and inclusion. Based on the current guidelines, I can and am officially declaring my eligibility for the upcoming WNBA draft in May 2027,” he continued.

“I am definitely not here to mock, make fun of, or disrespect and community or personal choices. I am simply asking that the current rules be equally applied to everyone, the rules that represent the very values that many WNBA players and coaches have publicly advocated for.

“My team and I are prepared to ensure these guidelines are applied equally, consistently, and without exception. And I look forward to the WNBA honoring its stated principles. See you at training camp.”

Trump threatens to bomb Oman if it gets in way of Iran deal: Report www.channelnewsasia.com

EXCERPT:

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump on Monday (Aug 17) threatened to bomb Oman if it “gets in the way” of a US deal with Iran on the Strait of Hormuz and called for Iran to surrender.

“If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the shit out of them,” Trump told Fox News journalist Trey Yingst, referring to ongoing talks between Oman and Iran on control of the strait, while Washington is also pursuing its own talks.

Iranian and Omani officials have been talking for weeks on future maritime navigation arrangements through the shipping route, and the foreign ministry in Tehran said earlier Monday that the two sides were working on a joint declaration.

However, Trump has repeatedly insisted that the strait – which Tehran effectively closed at the start of the Middle East war on Feb 28 – is under US control despite traffic remaining throttled.

On Friday, Trump claimed that he would even declare the Strait of Hormuz part of US territory, while Iran retorted that the crucial energy waterway it has blockaded “will remain Iranian”.

Prior to the launch of the US-Israeli war against Iran, the Hormuz Strait was considered an open, international waterway. It carries significant portions of global energy shipments, as well as other commodities.

Trump cuts military drills with South Korea citing ‘very good relationship’ with Kim Jong-un – US politics live | Donald Trump www.theguardian.com

EXCERPT:

US president Donald Trump said he ordered the Pentagon to scale back “inappropriate and hostile” military drills with South Korea, hours before the exercises began on Monday.

The drills under Ulchi Freedom Shield, one of two major annual exercises held by South Korea and the US, start on Monday and run until 27 August.

They were expected to involve about 18,000 South Korean troops, alongside US forces and personnel from 11 of the 18 member states of the United Nations Command (UNC), the multinational body that oversees the 1953 armistice that halted hostilities of the Korean war.

However, on Sunday evening, the US president said he was “not happy” with US participation “based on my very good relationship with Kim Jong-un”. He added that they were costly and “send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile, to a country that, as long as Donald J Trump has been president, has been unthreatening and respectful”.

NEW: Democrat Mayor Arrested In Connection With $1.5 Million Fraud Scheme trendingpoliticsnews.com
News Source
EXCERPT:

Mayor Brian DePeña of Lawrence, Massachusetts was arrested and charged Friday with one count of wire fraud and one count of money laundering in connection with allegations that he fraudulently obtained more than $1.5 million in COVID-19-related small business loans and diverted the proceeds for personal and campaign purposes.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts, DePeña, 61, who was elected mayor of Lawrence in November 2021 and reelected in November 2025, previously served on the Lawrence City Council from 2016 to 2021. He owns Tenares Tire Services Inc., a tire sales and automotive services business in Lawrence.

Prosecutors allege that in 2020 and 2021 he applied for Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) from the U.S. Small Business Administration on behalf of that business. These loans, offered during the pandemic to eligible small businesses experiencing substantial financial disruptions, carried an interest rate of 3.75 percent and were restricted to use as working capital to alleviate economic injury caused by COVID-19. Working capital, according to the charging documents, did not include funding a political campaign, paying personal taxes, or paying off mortgages.

The charging documents state that DePeña caused Tenares Tire to apply for and obtain an initial EIDL of $150,000 in June 2020 and used the majority of those funds as working capital for the business. By early 2021, however, prosecutors allege he needed additional cash because his mayoral campaign was struggling to pay bills, he owed the IRS for back taxes, and he owed nearly $900,000 to two private hard-money lenders charging 12 percent and 8 percent interest on loans secured by various properties he owned in Lawrence.

Japan’s economy has slowed in the second quarter of the year amid moribund consumption and capital spending, according to official figures.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew 0.3 percent in the April-June period from the first quarter, data released by Japan’s Cabinet Office on Monday showed. It was the third consecutive expansion but was down from 0.5 percent growth in the previous quarter and missed the 0.5 percent growth analysts had forecast.

On an annualised basis, the world’s fourth-largest economy expanded 1.1 percent.

A survey of 37 economists conducted by the Japan Center for Economic Research, a think tank, had forecast an annualised expansion of 1.67 percent.

Private consumption was flat in real terms while capital expenditures fell 1.2 percent, or 4.6 percent on an annualised basis, offsetting strong exports, according to the data.

Fauci Refuses Second Senate Testimony After Pleading the Fifth 111 Times slaynews.com

Dr. Anthony Fauci has refused to voluntarily appear before a second Senate panel investigating his handling of the pandemic, weeks after invoking the Fifth Amendment 111 times during testimony before another committee.

Fauci’s attorney, David Schertler, rejected a request from Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, arguing that another appearance would “impermissibly harass or degrade Dr. Fauci for political purposes.”

The refusal deepens Fauci’s confrontation with Republican lawmakers who are examining his role in the federal pandemic response, COVID-19 origins, vaccine policy, and government-funded research.
