A new report from Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union details the degrading and cruel conditions in ICE’s massive detention center known as Camp East Montana in El Paso.
“Human Rights Watch and the ACLU found that people detained at Camp East Montana endured conditions of confinement that amounted to enforced disappearance, cruel, degrading and inhuman treatment, excessive use of force including one extrajudicial killing, life-threatening medical neglect, barriers to legal representation, and coercive third-country removals,” the authors reported. “Together, these abuses violate fundamental protections under U.S. and international human rights law.”
Detainees detailed to researchers that were being beaten by guards, consistent denial of medical care and being prevented from contacting family members and lawyers. They also described overcrowding, unsanitary bathrooms, the lack of basic soap and hand sanitizers and living quarters that regularly flooded with dirty water and dust.
China’s Ethnic Unity Law took effect July 1, 2026. The law appears to attempt to advance Han ethnic supremacism both within China and globally. Global concerns about the laws effects on ethnic minorities within China were met by claims from CCP officials that the law was meant to “protect them.”

The International Rescue Committee, a humanitarian aid organization, previously said severe cuts to global aid weakened frontline healthcare and preparedness systems, leaving the Congo with a more fragile health system now than during the 2018-2020 outbreak that killed more than 2,000 individuals.
“The warning signs are flashing red,” Bob Kitchen, vice president of emergencies at IRC, said in a statement. “Increased conflict and cuts to global aid funding have dismantled defenses at exactly the wrong moment. The lesson from every previous outbreak is clear: delays cost lives. The risks are growing and the resources are shrinking; that is the brutal arithmetic facing global aid today.”

Minnesota officials, including Democrat Gov. Tim Walz, last month pardoned an illegal immigrant who was previously convicted of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl and who was slated to be deported.
With the recommendation of the Minnesota Clemency Review Commission (CRC), the Minnesota Board of Pardons — led by Walz, state Attorney General Keith Ellison and state Chief Justice Natalie Hudson — granted a pardon for Laos national Tou Lue Vang, 42, at its June 10 meeting, according to a letter informing Vang of the decision from Carli Stark, the executive director of the state CRC.
The pardon essentially gives Vang a clean slate.
“Being granted a pardon is a notable achievement and a reflection of the work you have done since your conviction,” Stark wrote in her letter to Vang.

I started my career as a high school history teacher back in 1985. I taught my students about the Holocaust every year and was fortunate enough one summer to be selected for a special National Endowment for the Humanities seminar for teachers, led by Professor Lawrence Langer, a leading Holocaust scholar. Professor Langer came up with the term the “choiceless choice” to describe the no-win situations Jews were put in during the Holocaust, when there was simply no real choice to be made in the face of the genocidal Nazis. The idea has stuck with me for four decades.
It came to mind again when I read a recent Washington Post article following the Supreme Court’s adverse ruling in our case, BPJ v. West Virginia, on June 30, in which Julian Mark writes, “Critics, including some trans rights advocates, say the movement has rushed to tee up causes that the court’s 6-3 conservative majority is not ready to embrace.” While elements of the article were thoughtful, it is based on a flawed premise that warrants exploration.
First of all, the idea that “the [LGBTQ+] movement has rushed to tee up [trans] causes” is completely off the mark. There have been 2,446 bills designed to limit the rights of LGBTQ+ people introduced into state legislatures since 2022 — at least one in every single one of our 50 states — and 255 of them have become law in 27 states. The large majority of these laws are aimed at trans people. The LGBTQ+ movement didn’t “tee up” these laws: the opponents of the LGBTQ+ movement did, because they saw a political advantage to be won by picking on a small and relatively powerless minority and cynically exploited it. In other words, we didn’t pick this fight. We didn’t “tee up” trans issues. Our opponents did.

David Perdue for labeling Ossoff a “socialist.” Ossoff was endorsed by Bernie Sanders (and Ossoff welcomed it.) And yet, Ossoff can smear Trump as a “totalitarian farce” with no checking.
On Monday, PolitiFact threw a “False” at Ossoff’s current Republican opponent, Rep. Mike Collins:
U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff “cast the deciding vote for the inflation disaster,” referring to the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.
PolitiFact newbie Ben Brasch really had to stretch reality to come to Ossoff’s defense. The Senate vote on the “Inflation Reduction Act” was 50-50, so if he had voted against it, that vote would decide it. He was a deciding vote.
But no, everybody blamed Kamala:
Ossoff supported the Inflation Reduction Act. Every Democratic vote was needed, but he was not the “deciding vote.” Harris, as vice president, came in to break the tie.
Despite its name, the law had little effect on inflation. Inflation had peaked by the time it passed, and many provisions required phasing in over several years.

Republican members of Congress tried turning up the heat on Canada on Tuesday, depicting the northern border as a dangerous security threat allowing lots of drugs and illegal migrants into the U.S.
But when the Republicans on the House border security and enforcement subcommittee tried to present evidence that such threats from Canada are on the rise, the statistics showed otherwise.
Tuesday’s hearing on Capitol Hill was entitled “Northern Exposure: Assessing the Evolving Threat Landscape at America’s Northern Border.”
It kicked off with the subcommittee’s chairman, Mississippi Republican Michael Guest, claiming that the Trump administration’s crackdown on the southern border has driven Mexican cartels to shift their criminal enterprises to the border with Canada.
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin made similar claims in June.
“Illegal crossings have begun to shift north,” claimed Guest. “Drug seizures at the northern border have steadily increased, reaching record levels this year.”

On Monday, NBC’s Today featured a four-minute report from London-based Molly Hunter obsessing over Prince Harry’s planned visit to his home country to promote the Invictus Games for veterans that he founded. ABC and CBS also offered full reports speculating on Prince Harry’s visit and whether Meghan Markle and their children will also attend.
On June 17, NBC’s Hunter performed a four-minute Today report (complete with “In Depth” graphic) on the Earth-shaking story that 12-year-old Prince George will attend the Eton College private boys’ school in the fall, just as his father and Prince Harry did. To pad the report, she also touted how Princess Kate did a 24-hour mountain climb for charity after her recovery from cancer.
ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, NPR, CNN, and MS NOW cannot be bothered for much more substantive British matters, like a recent report on the rape of young girls that came from Member of Parliament Rupert Lowe. The report estimates rape gangs victimized at least 250,000 girls across 149 local British authorities since the 1990s. It says many victims were young teenagers. Some were as young as four years old.
