The operator, a man named Johann Maelzel, would assemble a paying audience, open the doors of the lower cabinet and show an impressively whirring clockwork mechanism that filled the inner compartments beneath the seated figure. Then he would close the cabinet, and invite a challenger to play chess. The automaton – the robot, as we would say now – would gaze at the opponent’s move, ponder, then raise its mechanical arm and make a stiff but certain move of its own.

The thing was a sensation.

Before it was destroyed by fire in New York in the 1850s, it played games with everyone from Benjamin Franklin to, by legend at least, Napoleon Bonaparte. Artificial intelligence, the 18th Century thought, had arrived, wearing a fez and ticking away like Captain Hook’s crocodile.

I should rush to say that, of course, the thing was a fraud, or rather, a trick – a clever magician’s illusion. A sliding sled on well-lubricated castors had been fitted inside the lower cabinet and the only real ingenuity was that this let a hidden chess player glide easily, and silently, into a prone position inside. There was just a lot more room to hide in the cabinet than all that clockwork machinery suggested.

An initiative to protect abortion access in Arizona has gathered more signatures than it needs to make the November ballot. If it passes, it wouldn’t be the first time Arizonans have used direct democracy to enshrine rights directly relevant to women. A popular initiative gave Arizona women the right to vote in 1912, years before the 19th Amendment brought suffragists nationwide victory.

Getting a measure on the ballot is expensive and onerous, says Dawn Penich, a spokesperson for Arizona for Abortion Access, the organization behind this year’s measure. But her group is determined to champion it to restore abortion rights and overcome restrictions put in place by Arizona Republicans. They’ve raised over $12 million to recruit hundreds of volunteers, train them, and send them out to canvas in high-traffic areas under the blazing desert sun. Their goal: get at least 383,923 Arizonans who are registered to vote to sign a petition so it qualifies for the ballot.

“It is grueling work,” Penich said. “I’m out in the field, on the streets, at trailheads with our volunteers many days a week.”

A Republican-backed bill to make it harder to amend the constitution through the initiative petition process – thus ending majority rule voting in Missouri – has died after a record-breaking 50-hour Democratic Senate filibuster that made national news.

Currently, ballot referendums generated by citizen-led initiative petitions need only a simple majority to pass. SJR74 would have required the approval of a majority of voters statewide and a majority of voters in five of the state’s eight congressional districts to pass.

The disagreement that triggered the filibuster was about “ballot candy,” items added to the bill meant to trick voters into supporting the measure. Those items included a requirement that those who vote in Missouri elections be U.S. citizens and a clause that foreign governments cannot fund ballot initiative efforts. Both items are already required under Missouri law.

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Thursday denounced foreign politicians joining “radical anti-Government rallies” against the domestic law on transparency of foreign influence in the capital city of Tbilisi as “unfriendly acts against Georgian people”.

Papuashvili’s comments followed visiting foreign ministers from Latvia, Estonia, Iceland and Lithuania joining a protest rally against the law on Rustaveli Avenue on Wednesday.

In his social media message, Papuashvili noted the development was “not just an unfriendly act against Georgian people, but also a symptom that the Russian Government had imparted some of its worldview to its staunchest opponents, especially in the Baltics”.

Addressing a rally of exalted youth led by radical opposition parties against the Government, and calling them the ‘whole nation’ is something that you would expect from a Soviet or Russian propagandist, not a foreign minister of an EU member state. And helping to topple a democratically elected government just because you do not like their legislation is out of the Soviet handbook”, he said.

Large protests took place on the main Tel Aviv-Jerusalem motorway on Monday as anti-government activists launched a “day of disruption” to mark the start of the Knesset’s summer assembly.

Police clashed with the demonstrators, whose key demands included an early election amid the failure to bring home the hostages and disagreements over Charedi conscription legislation.

Demonstrators were also rallying over the predicament of the tens of thousands of residents from the north and the south who remain displaced due to attacks from Hezbollah and Hamas, Times of Israel reported.

Protesters came from across Israel and convoys merged en route before starting to arrive in Jerusalem at around 2pm.

Vietnam’s Communist Party has named police minister To Lam as the state president, the government said Saturday, and also nominated a new head of the parliament in a major leadership reshuffle.Unprecedentedly for a one-party nation once known for its stable politics, two state presidents and a parliament speaker have stepped down in less than 18 months, all for unspecified “wrongdoing” amid a major anti-graft campaign that is unnerving foreign investors because of its chilling effect on bureaucracy.

Thousands of Georgians led by Orthodox Christian clerics marked “Family Purity Day” on Friday, marching down the same central avenue in Tbilisi that has been the scene of some of the fiercest anti-government protests in the country’s history.

The contrasting groups staging the marches – pro-Orthodox and conservative on one side and pro-European on the other – spotlight the deep divisions within Georgian society as it grapples with an unprecedented political crisis.

For over a month, thousands of protesters, many of them young people, have filled Tbilisi’s streets on a near-nightly basis to voice their opposition to a draft law on “foreign agents” they condemn as authoritarian and Russian-inspired.

The United States and the European Union have repeatedly warned the ruling Georgian Dream party to drop the bill, which protesters fear will harm the South Caucasus country’s bid to join the European Union.

Kansas City Chiefs’ Kicker Harrison Butker went viral after delivering a graduation speech to a private Catholic University that calls out anti-family, anti-heteronormative woke culture and calls on women to choose Motherhood over a corporate career. While the NFL condemned the speech, others have rallied in support of the kicker, including making his jersey the number one selling jersey in the NFL.

The MSM has been busy mischaracterizing his speech and pretending that it is the social norm to be outraged that some believe a woman’s best future might be, on average, being a Mom, not a CEO. One response from a tone-deaf anti-Americanist leftist, Gayle King, was to insist a man should lose his millionaire job for daring to say women should be mothers. She screeched, “I think everybody has the right to be wrong or hold opinions that others feel are wrong, but he has a right to say what he believes. But it is — it is — was very antiquated thinking, I think, in 2024. But a lot of people — a lot of people feel the way he does. The fact that he got a standing ovation, I think, says a lot.”

On Friday, CBS finally joined the virulently anti-family liberal media’s rhetorical lynch mob fighting to convict Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker in the court of public opinion with a discussion during CBS Mornings and, while ABC moved on, NBC’s Today upped the intensity of its disgusting and hypocritical venom toward a speech about the importance of the family.

In other words, Butker stood up for something the three co-hosts on Today have personally and repeatedly discussed is paramount to their lives. Instead of scorning him, they could have mentioned the numerous charities Butker has supported, include Foster’s Outriders charity (which our Craig Bannister explained here).

CBS roped Butker into their “Talk of the Table” segment with fill-in featured co-host Nancy Chen claiming Butker “seemed to dismiss women with career goals.”

Oof. We’re already off to a bad start. Butker said, in fact, nothing of the sort of instead argued many of the female graduates would come to see motherhood and marriage as their greatest accomplishment.

Co-host and Democratic donor Gayle King and co-host Nate Burleson went first, opining Butker shouldn’t lose his job.

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City–Saint Joseph has issued a statement voicing support for Kansas City Chief’s kicker Harrison Butker and his “right to share his faith and express his opinions.”

Since his commencement speech, Butker has seen his words get distorted in the media and has faced enraged calls for his dismissal from the team.  The NFL put out a statement distancing itself from player, and espousing a “commitment to inclusion.”

The official X account of the city of Kansas City even went so far as to partially doxx Butker, prompting Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey to launch an investigation into the Mayor’s office.

In a statement to the Catholic News Agency (CNA) Thursday, Bishop James V. Johnston defended the devout KC kicker.

“Harrison Butker’s passion for his Catholic faith and his family are beautiful and well known,” Johnston said.  “And like most people, he also has strong opinions on where we are as a Church and as a nation.”

Johnston continued:  “The Catholic Church believes that God calls everyone to pursue holiness no matter what path they take. As St. Paul notes, that diversity of callings and vocations is essential to the life and mission of the Church.”

Transgender Runner Beats High School Girls to Win State Title … Then the Crowd Turns on Him

… At a women’s state championship on Saturday in Eugene, Oregon, the audience clearly felt the injustice of a male runner winning a race specifically meant for women.

Aayden Gallagher, a transgender athlete, won the Girls’ 6A 200-meter state championship on Saturday, but the audience wasn’t happy with the result, booing and jeering as he crossed the finish line, according to Fox News.

Gallagher, a sophomore, crossed the finish line first with a time of 24.29 seconds, two-tenths of a second ahead of the runner-up.

The booing continued as Gallagher was presented with the state title on the podium at the meet held at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene.

If someone “wins” a sports competition because they have an unfair advantage, that is cheating. So rather than cheers, booing any title holder who is a fraud would be more appropriate.

A male high school senior was booed after he was named the Oregon Girls’ 6A 200-meter state champion because that is what he deserved.

According to the New York Post:

Aayden Gallagher, of McDaniel High School, won the state title by two-tenths of a second. Gallagher was also booed while crossing the finish line of the race.

Gallagher also had the best time of the preliminary heats in the event.

The sophomore also ran the fastest 400-meter prelim, but lost the final of the 400-meter by 0.15 of a second.

Alphabet’s YouTube on Tuesday said it would comply with a court decision and block access inside Hong Kong to 32 video links deemed prohibited content, in what critics say is a blow to freedoms in the financial hub amid a security clampdown.

The action follows a government application granted by Hong Kong’s Court of Appeal requesting the ban of a protest anthem called “Glory to Hong Kong.” The judges warned that dissidents seeking to incite secession could weaponize the song for use against the state.

Joe Biden’s DOJ/FBI is hunting down pro-life conservatives while ignoring Antifa and BLM militants and the radical Hamas supporters shutting down and terrorizing college campuses.

Under Biden, the DOJ weaponized the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, a 1994 law that prohibits interfering with anyone obtaining or providing “reproductive health services,” as a punishment for the Supreme Court’s reversal of  Roe v. Wade in June 2022.

After the Supreme Court ruling, Biden formed the DOJ-led Reproductive Rights Task Force to enforce the act.
According to The Epoch Times, The FACE Act has now been used 130 times against pro-life individuals but only used three times against pro-abortion protesters.

(Campaign Life Coalition) — I’m delighted to announce the second annual National “Pride” Flag Walk-Out Day on June 3rd!

More about that in a moment, but first, I want to share some relevant background…

In 2023, on the heels of a budding parental rebellion against school board indoctrination of children with LGBT propaganda, we launched the first ever National “Pride” Flag Walkout Day to coincide with the first day of June.

Our strategy was to cause classrooms across Canada to be noticeably emptier on the day that most school boards begin a month-long transgender and homosexual indoctrination campaign.

We hoped that would send a strong message to teachers, principals and elected trustees that parents are fed-up with radical sexual programming being forced on their kids.

Schools in England will be told by the government not to teach children about progressive theories on so-called “gender identity” and sex education in general to children under the age of nine.

Fresh guidance from the government will inform schools that they should not teach children that they can change their gender identity and that if asked, should only provide children with “biological” information about sex. Schools will also be required to inform children that they cannot legally change their gender until after they are 18. Meanwhile, teachers will be told that they should refrain from engaging in “explicit” conversations about sex until the age of 13, The Times reports.

The guidance, which will be published on Thursday, will also say that teachers should, if asked about the topic, inform children that “gender ideology” is contested, according to the BBC.

Liz Carr is an actress, comedian and disability rights activist produced a documentary titled; Better off Dead? that was aired on May 14 by BBC1.

Carr who is best known for her role as Clarissa Mullery on the BBC series Silent Witness, interviewed Ellen Wiebe, a Vancouver doctor who has committed some of Canada’s most controversial euthanasia deaths.

Elmira Tanatarova reported for the Daily Mail on May 15 that many of the viewers of the Better off Dead? documentary were uneasy with Wiebe as she giggled when discussing the number of her euthanasia deaths. Tanatarova reports:

A Canadian doctor who has personally euthanised more than 400 people has left viewers feeling ‘uneasy’ as she ‘giggled’ while discussing the solemn topic with a disability rights campaigner in a new BBC documentary.

Speaking to Liz Carr’s programme, Better Off Dead?, Dr Ellen Wiebe, who works with Dying With Dignity, had audiences feeling uncomfortable as she laughed and smiled while discussing assisted death.

‘I love my job,’ she said in the show, which aired on Tuesday night. ‘I’ve always loved being a doctor and I delivered over a 1000 babies and I took care of families but this is the very best work I’ve ever done in the last seven years.

Claiming to be born in the wrong body is logically equivalent to claiming to be born with the wrong ears, toes, and hair. That’s not how reality works and some countries understand that better than others.

Out of all the places in the world, who would have thought that Peru would lead the world back to sanity?

The Peruvian government had declared that the gender-bender crowd is, in fact, mentally ill. They claim this clarification was made so that they can get the mental help they need and are guaranteed the proper care. And so far, I don’t see what the problem is but the left will of course scream about a nonexistent trans genocide and yell platitudes like, “Trans people exist.”

One of the biggest problems with the left’s argument regarding systemic racism is that it doesn’t exist. This is why they have to manufacture it themselves.

“New York remains committed to providing travelers with a premier experience that includes world-class amenities and record involvement by local minority- and women-owned businesses will ensure just that,” Governor Hochul said in a press release. “This transformative project uplifts these businesses and deepens investments in the community while bolstering the state workforce.”

Who profits from nonprofit organizations assisting illegal immigrants? Because it’s definitely not the American people. But there are many NGOs currently making big bucks off of Biden’s open border and it’s worse than you thought.

According to The Washington Examiner:

Communities throughout the United States are suffering while they try to find money to house, clothe, feed, educate, and provide medical care for millions of illegal immigrants caught and released into the country by President Joe Biden. However, the left-wing nonprofit organizations paid to serve migrants are profiting pleasantly.

According to an examination by the Free Press of three of the most prominent nonprofit organizations paid by the Biden administration for migrant services, their revenues have more than tripled since 2018, and each of their CEOs makes more than $500,000 a year.

Basically, the White House has decided to open the floodgates and let everyone and their grandmas in, while he funds the $500,000 salary for its CEOs. And I don’t care what anyone says, when the CEO is making half a million dollars a year, they should automatically lose their “non-profit” status because these people are clearly motivated by profit at this point.

Archbishop Julian Porteous of Hobart, Tasmania issued his four-page document titled “We are the Salt to the Earth” on May 2. It was sent to Catholic schools and parishes in the archdiocese to provide guidance for their teachings in light of recent political developments.

Since the pro-life Dobbs decision in 2022, which overturned the 50-year reign of Roe v. Wade, the debate on the life issue has only intensified. A new layer of the onion was revealed in late February, when Alabama lawmakers wrestled with the topic of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and whether frozen embryos were considered unborn children.

The Alabama Supreme Court ultimately ruled “that anyone who destroys a frozen embryo may be held liable under the state’s Wrongful Death of a Minor Act — a law that has historically applied to born and unborn children.” Such a decision was not free from backlash, and months later, both Democrats and Republicans continue to hash out their views on the matter. However, a recent Pew Research poll revealed some interesting insight to where both parties stand.

Nurse: $25,000 could be better used to teach health care management, leadership

Most of a state “racial healing” grant will be spent on a “diversity, equity, and inclusion” consultant for Elmhurst University’s nursing school, according to documents shared with The College Fix.

The Healing Illinois grant comes from the Illinois Department of Human Services and YWCA Northwestern Illinois, according to the grant acceptance letter. The goal is to fund projects supporting “racial healing” and “racial equity.”

As The Fix previously reported, the Illinois government plans to spend up to $4.5 million on “anti-racism” and “racial healing” grants like the one to Elmhurst. The university received $25,000 through the program in March to “ensure its Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) curriculum fully integrates diversity, equity and inclusion concepts.”

Moms for Liberty, several states, and the Young America Foundation are taking legal action against the Biden administration’s new Title IX regulations. The lawsuit aims to halt the implementation of these regulations, which are perceived to undermine parental rights in K-12 education. Represented by the Southeastern Legal Foundation and the Mountain States Legal Foundation, Moms for Liberty argues that the new federal language protecting “gender identity” as a class threatens parental authority and stifles students’ ability to express discomfort in certain situations.

According to a Tuesday press release, Tiffany Justice and Tina Descovich, co-founders of Moms for Liberty, assert that parental rights extend beyond the classroom and that the new regulations will introduce gender ideology into every aspect of schooling, from sports teams to classroom discussions. They emphasize that parents should have the ultimate say in their children’s education and express concern about the potential consequences of the Biden administration’s mandates.
