In a secular society where ‘faith-based’ learning institutions are often viewed as fossils of a bygone age, education today is widely considered the rightful domain of secular governments.

Should governments even allow ‘special’ religious-based education anymore? Hasn’t religion caused so many conflicts in the past? Shouldn’t education be based on scientific facts, not ‘superstitious’ beliefs? Even believers have to ask themselves, does Christian education matter anymore?

That’s the question I have been asked to address at the Forum on Faith and Society (Forum glaube & gesellschaft) in Fribourg, Switzerland, this weekend. Over the past decade, this forum has explored the challenge of Christian witness in a pluralistic world. Former YWAM colleague Dr Walter Dürr developed the Center Faith & Society at Fribourg University to build bridges between academic theology, different expressions of Christian spirituality and the practice of the Church and social life. The forum, the centre’s annual ‘flagship’ event, convenes a wide array of faith-based movements and institutions. Speakers have included Tom Wright, Justin Welby, Miroslav Wolf and, this year, Tom Holland.

The bishop begins the episode with a commentary on part of the Sermon on the Mount, in which Christ calls the disciples the salt of the earth. Strickland, looking at the passage in light of the feast of St. Barnabas, notes that the saint was not one of the original apostles, but joined their number as one of their successors.

A group of 20 theologians concluded an evaluation of 107 synod reports from national bishops conferences and Eastern Catholic Churches following nearly two weeks of meetings in Rome. Source: CNA.

The theologians, who met from June 4 to June 14, were asked to provide an analysis of the reports, which will help Synod officials draft the Synod on Synodality’s working document, or Instrumentum Laboris, for the second session of the Synod in October. The analysis from the theologians has not been made public.

The ongoing Synod on Synodality is focused on studying various questions about how the Church should operate. Some of the questions focus on the role of women, inclusion, women deacons, and outreach to those who struggle with same-sex attraction.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KCTV) – Faith leaders in Missouri and their legal team have vowed to continue to fight for women’s rights after a St. Louis judge denied the law violated the separation of church and state.

The legal team that represents 14 Missouri faith leaders who challenged the state’s abortion ban, announced on Friday, June 14, that it is set to discuss the next steps with its clients after an unfavorable ruling from St. Louis Circuit Court Judge Jason Sengheiser.

“We respectfully disagree with the court’s decision and will be discussing next steps with our faith leader clients. Missouri’s abortion ban is a direct attack on the separation of church and state, religious freedom, and reproductive freedom,” the legal team said. “Missouri lawmakers made clear that they were imposing their personal religious beliefs on all Missourians when they enacted these laws. We remain committed to restoring abortion access in Missouri.”

The Orthodox Christians in the Republic of Moldova on Thursday celebrate the Ascension of Jesus Christ, when it is 40 days since the Resurrection of the Savior. On this day, the Christians greet each other with “Christ has ascended” and respond with “He has ascended indeed”, IPN reports.

According to the canons, the church marks the moment when the Savior Jesus Christ gathered his disciples in the Mountains of Galilee, in front of everyone ascended to heaven with his body and promised them that the Holy Spirit will come on earth in ten days, an event that will be observed on Pentecost Sunday. The significance of this feast is the connection between heaven and earth, through the ascension with the body to heaven, after Christ received a body and came to earth.

Ascension Day marks the end of the feast of the Resurrection of the Lord. On this day, the Christians usually bake Easter cake, Paska and paint eggs red with which they go to church, just like on the Easter holiday. Parishioners who wish can receive holy communion on this day.

Delegates to Synod 2024 unanimously approved recommendations aimed at strengthening relationships between the Christian Reformed Church in North America and churches outside North America, adopting the Global Vision Team report from the Council of Delegates.

These recommendations include the introduction of a “Vision Implementation Team.” According to Zachary King, general secretary of the CRCNA, the long-term work of that team would be “the possibility of developing an ecclesiastical body that would be the global CRC church.” The body would not be a “single global denomination,” but rather an opportunity for the CRCNA and its global denominational partners “to go deeper in partnership” with each other.

Synod is the annual general assembly of the CRCNA. It is meeting June 14-20 in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Council of Delegates is the church’s ecclesiastical board that works on behalf of synod in between meetings of synod.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Condemning the killing of Christians in Congo, Pope Francis said the sacrifices of modern martyrs are seeds that grow into examples of Christian witness for the church.

After praying the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square June 16, the pope referenced the “painful news” of violence in eastern Congo where over 120 people were reported to have been killed by suspected Islamist rebels in recent weeks. Local officials have said the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group affiliated to the Islamic State, were responsible for the attacks.

“Among the victims, many are Christians killed in ‘odium fidei,’” in hatred of the faith, Pope Francis said. “They are martyrs. Their sacrifice is a seed that germinates and bears fruit, and teaches us to bear witness to the Gospel with courage and consistency.”

Christian approaches to political engagement often fall into one of two camps: ‘distinctive’ or ‘engaged’.

The ‘distinctives’ tend to be pessimistic about politics and say that the Church should stick to its priorities of evangelism and discipleship for eternity, rather than wasting energy in social action and politics in the present. But the Bible nowhere presents the Christian with such an either/or choice. Instead, it calls the Christian both to teach the gospel and love their neighbour.

The creation mandate of Genesis 1.26–28 to look after the earth still stands alongside Jesus’ great commission to his followers in Matthew 28.19 to make disciples of all nations. Paul commands the Galatian church to do good to all people, beginning with those in the Church. And when Paul summarises the purpose of the Bible in 2 Timothy 3.15–16, he writes that it is to make us wise for salvation in Christ Jesus and to equip the Christian for every good work. All this stewarding the earth, loving neighbour, doing good to all people cannot avoid involvement in politics.

INDIANAPOLIS — Donald Trump on Monday will make a virtual appearance before a Christian group that calls for abortion to be “eradicated entirely,” as the presumptive Republican nominee again takes on an issue that Democrats want to make a focus of this year’s presidential election.

The former president pre-recorded a video that will be shown at an event hosted by The Danbury Institute, which is meeting in Indianapolis in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention. The Danbury Institute, an association of churches, Christians and organizations, says on its website that it believes “that the greatest atrocity facing our generation today is the practice of abortion” and it “must be ended.”

“We will not rest until it is eradicated entirely,” the group said.

An ancient parchment has been unearthed, revealing a fascinating tale from Jesus Christ’s youth that seems to have been omitted from subsequent versions of the Bible.

In an era where Taylor Swift is known for dropping previously unreleased tracks and posthumous albums emerge online, not to mention ABBA’s holograms recreating their gigs from decades past, no one anticipated the discovery of a new miracle attributed to Jesus.

Donald Trump’s presidency delivered to Christian conservatives some of their most coveted goals: Hundreds of sympathetic judges joined the federal bench. The U.S. Embassy in Israel moved to Jerusalem. And the center of gravity on the Supreme Court shifted firmly to the right.

Since Trump lost his reelection bid, they have claimed additional successes, with Republican-run red states enacting legislation that restricts transgender care and limits the books that can be taught in school or borrowed from the library. The Supreme Court in 2022 ended the legal right to abortion. Last year, Sen. Mike Johnson (R-La.), an evangelical Christian who has said his worldview is the Bible, became speaker of the House.

But far from declaring victory, those who advocate for a more pronounced role for hard-line conservative Christian doctrine in American public life are actively planning to enact a fresh wave of changes in a second Trump term. Should Trump reclaim the presidency in November, they say, it would represent a historic opportunity to put their interpretation of Christianity at the center of government policy.

After noticing the word “Jesus” in the text, researchers realized that this seemingly insignificant papyrus contained a part of the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, which had been left out of the Bible.

Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek HamburgThe papyrus fragment was long dismissed as something insignificant, like a shopping list.

For decades, researchers at Hamburg Carl von Ossietzky State and University Library dismissed a scrap of papyrus in their collection as “insignificant.” But two researchers took a second look — and realized that it was actually the oldest written record of Jesus Christ’s childhood.

The papyrus belongs to the Infancy Gospel of Thomas — which is not included in the Bible — and recounts one of the first times that Jesus, at the age of just five, performed a miracle.

The Surprise Discovery Of The Papyrus Describing Jesus’ Childhood

According to Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU), the papyrus dates back to the fourth or fifth century C.E. and spent decades in a collection at Hamburg Carl von Ossietzky State and University Library. Just a ragged fragment, and covered in an untidy scrawl, the papyrus was long dismissed as something “insignificant” like a letter or a shopping list.

But then papyrologists Lajos Berkes of the Institute for Christianity and Antiquity at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Gabriel Nocchi Macedo from the University of Liège, Belgium, took a second look.

Despite 61 percent of Southern Baptists voting to ban churches that defy the biblical standard that women cannot teach men in church, the measure failed to take effect as it required a 2/3 majority to enforce the proposed the rule. The ruling assures the further schism of the Southern Baptist church as it suffers under an anti-Christ minority within its ranks, the 39 percent who cast their votes against God and His Word.

  • The Southern Baptist Convention narrowly rejected a proposal to enshrine a ban on churches with women pastors in the denomination’s constitution.

  • The proposal received 61% of the vote but failed to meet the two-thirds supermajority requirement.

  • The church’s official doctrinal statement still limits the office of pastor to men, a position supported by opponents of the constitutional ban.

Southern Baptists narrowly rejected a proposal Wednesday to enshrine a ban on churches with women pastors in the denomination’s constitution after opponents argued it was unnecessary because the denomination already has a way of ousting such churches.

The vote received support from 61% of the delegates, but it failed to get the required two-thirds supermajority. The action reversed a preliminary vote last year in favor of the official ban.

But it still leaves the Southern Baptist Convention with its official doctrinal statement saying the office of pastor is limited to men. Even the opponents of the ban said they favored that doctrinal statement but didn’t think it was necessary to reinforce it in the constitution.

But during the April school holidays, an unknown school parent reported to the principal that Charlotte was in a same-sex relationship. The parent said they had discovered her sexuality in a Facebook post. “I got a text message from the principal saying: ‘Sorry to intrude in your non-term time. But I’ve sent you a very important email and I need you to address it immediately’,” Charlotte said.

Charlotte* was sacked by a Christian private school after her same-sex relationship was discovered by a parent. Nick Moir

Charlotte had kept her relationship secret from the school since she started seeing her girlfriend in January this year. The couple never held hands in public, lest a parent or student see them. She was not friends with any parents on Facebook, so she still doesn’t know how a parent saw when she changed her social media relationship status. All she knows is that it ended her career at the school.

VATICAN CITY, Holy See — Pope Francis again used a vulgar term for gay men in a recent meeting with priests in Rome, one that prompted an extraordinary apology from the Catholic Church leader two weeks ago, Italian media reports said Wednesday.

Visiting the Salesian Pontifical University on Tuesday, the 87-year-old pontiff used the term “frociaggine”, a word that translates as “faggotry” in the Roman dialect of Italian.

“At the Vatican, there is an ambiance of ‘frociaggine’,” Francis said during the private meeting with around 200 priests at the school, according to the ANSA press agency.

“Gays are good boys… they are searching for the Lord. But it would be better to guide them towards a good spiritual father, towards a psychologist” instead of accepting them in seminaries, added the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

The European Parliament held their elections from June 6 to June 9, 2024 resulting in a shift in the balance of power. It appears that the European Parliament will likely have more of a  conservative focus over the next few years.

In response to the European election results and the shift in european politics, French President, Emmanuel Macron, on June 10 called a snap election with his hope of catching conservative political parties off-guard. The election will be on June 29 – 30 and the second tier on July 6 – 7.

For those who oppose euthanasia, France’s euthanasia proposal has technically died with the snap election. After the election the euthanasia proposal will need to be re-introduced. If Macron loses support, it is unlikely that the euthanasia proposal will immediately return.

A similar situation exists in the UK where Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called a snap election for July 4. The difference is that Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, is leading in the polls and Starmer has promised that if elected his party would legalize assisted suicide.

BARTLESVILLE, OK — Over the past year, The Voice of the Martyrs has creatively challenged people to call for the release of falsely imprisoned persecuted Christians in Eritrea. Through VOM digital media campaigns, millions of people have heard about the horrific treatment of persecuted Christians in Eritrea, nearly 20,000 people committed to pray, U.S. leaders responded and 13 Christian prisoners were released.

Over 5.5 million people heard about the 20-year anniversary of two Eritrean church leaders’ imprisonment through the ministry’s digital efforts this year. Social media influencers, such as Jen Bricker-Bauer, Nathan Harmon, Gabby Hall, Mark Hall, Solomon Jordan and others, used their platforms to raise awareness of persecuted Christians in Eritrea.

In 2023, VOM asked Christians to add their voice and demand the release of Eritrean prisoners through persecution.com/eritreanprisoners. There, believers committed to pray, posted on social media tagging Eritrean government leaders, and sent letters to the Eritrean embassy.

“God’s people have shown tremendous support for Pastors Haile Nayzgi and Dr. Kiflu Gebremeskel,” said Todd Nettleton, VOM Vice President. “On May 23, 2004, these two Christians leaders of the Full Gospel Church of Eritrea were arrested for the ‘crime’ of being a pastor.”

The latest data numbers for reported abortions from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) show that doctors performed 10 abortions in January 2024 under the medical necessity exception of the Human Life Protection Act. This brings the total reported under that exception to 91 beginning since July of 2022, the month following the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in Dobbs.

No woman has died for lack of a life-saving exception. No doctor has faced prosecution by a DA, a lawsuit from the Attorney General, or sanction by the Texas Medical Board related to these cases.

At the same time, reported elective abortions have plummeted from thousands per month to zero, according to the same HHSC reports, as summarized here:

“Texas’ pro-life laws are saving babies’ lives from abortion and saving women’s lives in the rare and tragic cases of life-threatening pregnancy complications,” said Amy O’Donnell, Communications Director of Texas Alliance for Life. “We are pleased to see the law is protecting both women and babies as planned.”

CHARLESTON — Following the death of 14-year-old Kyneddi Miller, the governor and state lawmakers are pushing to bolster homeschool requirements in an effort to prevent future child deaths.

Kyneddi, who was found in a “skeletal state” in April, was homeschooled beginning in 2021. Her family lived in Boone County.

On Friday, Gov. Jim Justice said that he may call a special session that would focus on the issue.

“We’re in discussion with the legislature,” he said during a news conference. “The homeschooling issue — we probably need to find a way to tighten it. That’s an area we can [for] sure probably make things a little better.”

Jamila Jacob of Lahore, Pakistan was arrested and charged with blasphemy according to the Lahore Police. They allege she told a Muslim shop owner “Jesus Christ is better than your prophet.” The report alleges she made other “blasphemous” statements as well. Asif Ali reported her to the police knowing it could get her killed.

The Christian community of Lahore is on edge, accusing Muslims of using blasphemy laws to get them arrested whenever they have any disagreements with them. In this case, they claim the altercation with the shop owner was minor and nothing blasphemous was said.

The Lahore police have arrested Jamila Jacob, a Christian woman, on charges of committing blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The arrest followed an FIR filed at the North Cantonment police station, Lahore by Asif Ali, a local shopkeeper.

According to the FIR, Asif Ali reported that at approximately 6:30 AM on June 4, Jamila visited his shop to purchase Sunsilk shampoo. Dissatisfied with the product, she requested another brand. During this exchange, Ali alleges that Jamila noticed an Islamic religious inscription in the shop and began making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Ali claims that Jamila said, “Jesus Christ is better than your prophet,” and continued to make blasphemous comments. The FIR states that Wajid Ali, Usman Ali, and other shopkeepers witnessed the incident.

Based on the complaint, Jamila was arrested from her home, and an FIR was swiftly registered under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code. This section deals with blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad and carries severe penalties, including the death penalty. Jamila, who is reported to be mentally challenged, was taken into custody amidst rising tensions in the area.

The Tampa Police Department will be sporting rainbow-colored “Pride” badges during what some refer to as “Pride Month,” a month to either reassert homo-trans-non-binary power over heteronormative culture or “celebrate” our diverse sexual and gender preferences. The badge will also be celebrating the pride of being non-white in what is surely not a violation of basic Civil Rights law.

Would a police officer sporting a rainbow “pride” badge rather than the official Tampa Police Department badge be more or less likely to be respected by criminals?

The Florida city’s police department has introduced a new commemorative badge design for LGBT “Pride Month” and shared a video highlighting the symbolism behind the updated badge.

The new badge incorporates the colors and chevron design of the “Progress Pride” flag, which was created in 2018. The chevron added to the rainbow design represents “people of color and the transgender community,” according to Patch.

The Tampa Police Department showed off its new fashion statement in a video posted on social media on Thursday.

“Incorporating the Progress Pride Flag, this badge is 1 of 9 that members can choose to collect or wear in June,” the X post said. “Serving as a conversation starter & symbol of safety, we’re here to listen, learn, and ensure all members of our community feel included, safe, and respected.”

Last week, 22 senators issued a statement calling for an end to Democrats’ weaponization of the legal system, calling out “activist attorneys” and courts for targeting pro-life Americans. One particularly egregious case was that of Mark Houck, a Catholic pro-life activist arrested in 2022 and acquitted in 2023. Last month, he filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice (DOJ) for $4.3 million.

Houck’s arrest made national headlines when 20 heavily armed federal, state, and local law enforcement agents apprehended him on Sept. 23, 2022, at his home in Kintnersville, Pennsylvania, in front of his wife and seven children. Months earlier, he had agreed to turn himself in peacefully in response to federal charges.

Houck was outside the Blackwell abortion facility in Philadelphia on Oct. 13, 2021, when he shoved a Planned Parenthood escort away from his 12-year-old son after repeated attempts to deter the man’s aggressive, verbal harassment. The incident, caught on camera, portrays Planned Parenthood volunteer Bruce Love walking down the street away from the facility’s entrance to intimidate and harass Houck and his son.

News of revival from countries outside of the United States continues to travel around the world. This time, a massive gospel event in London last month saw more than 70,000 moved by the Spirit of God with many people giving their lives to Jesus Christ, experiencing healing and seeing deliverance.

Evangelist Daniel Chand, pastor of Pragma Church and founder of Walking Like Jesus Ministries (WLJM), says thousands worshipped Jesus and heard an encouraging message in Trafalgar Square in the U.K. on May 4th.

“We witnessed not only history but prophecy being (fulfilled),” he wrote. “Thousands in Trafalgar Square heard the Gospel. 70 years after Billy Graham stood in the same spot, myself along with other evangelists and pastors shared testimonies, prayed for the sick, and of course declared the greatest love story – The Gospel.”

David French just can’t help himself. Weeks after having his panel on polarization yanked from the Presbyterian Church in America’s (PCA) General Assembly over his well-documented character assassinations of faithful Christians, French wrote a New York Times op-ed bemoaning that his “old church canceled” him and made him “sad.”

Then he went on MSNBC and specifically “Morning Joe,” a network that routinely mocks Christians, to double down on his smear campaign and legitimize a bunch of republic-destroying lawfare because the target is Donald Trump.

So to recap, David French voluntarily and very publicly left the PCA because it was teeming with racists. But he wasn’t so bothered by it that he could resist returning to the denomination’s primary meeting to lecture on “polarization.” Then he was uninvited thanks to astute Christians quoting French’s own polarizing words.

But David French is the victim? OK.

He “canceled” the PCA and its evil white members long before they “canceled” him.
