A federal judge blocked a U.S. Department of Education rule stripping grants from teacher prep programs that teach DEI.

In February 2025, the department pulled “over $600 million in grants to institutions and nonprofits that were using taxpayer funds to train teachers and education agencies on divisive ideologies,” according to a news release.

“Training materials included inappropriate and unnecessary topics such as Critical Race Theory; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI); social justice activism; ‘anti-racism’; and instruction on white privilege and white supremacy,” the release states.

Calling the directive “arbitrary and capricious,” District Judge Angel Kelley ruled that officials failed to adequately explain why they were reversing course on grants that historically encouraged DEI programs, according to The Hill. 

“Rather than confining the Directive to actions that are traditionally understood to constitute discrimination, the record instead reflects that Defendants terminated grants with topics such as ‘acknowledging … racism’ and ‘anti-racism’—activities expressly undertaken to oppose discrimination,” Kelley wrote.

The judge added that the department bypassed mandatory public notice and comment periods, and ignored how heavily states, teachers, students, and principals depend on the funding, according to WPRI.

A daycare in Fort Worth, Texas, is facing a lawsuit seeking more than $1 million after a substitute teacher allegedly encouraged two 4-year-old children to fight and threw one child to the floor.

Heather and Richard Harris filed the lawsuit against Arka Montessori Academy of Risinger, following an April 27 incident involving their 4-year-old son. According to the lawsuit and findings from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, the incident occurred toward the end of the school day after the child was moved into a combined classroom.

At around 4:30 p.m., the child was placed in teacher Jacqueline De Luna’s classroom as classes were combined. While De Luna’s back was turned, another boy approached the child and struck him in the back, prompting a brief fight between two children.

De Luna separated the children and picked up the other boy, who was the son of substitute teacher Chynia Johnson. Johnson entered the classroom to provide coverage while De Luna used the restroom, and Johnson’s son subsequently pushed the other child in the chest.

At one point, Johnson allegedly grabbed the 4-year-old by the arm and dragged him toward her son while encouraging the boy to kick and hit him. Johnson then threw the child, causing him to fall onto the hard floor. Surveillance footage captured the incident.

Two recent lawsuits brought by the American Association of Professors against the Texas Tech and Texas A&M systems alleging free speech and academic freedom violations have raised questions, concerns, and debate about state authority over publicly funded college classrooms.

The lawsuits center on one-year-old policies within the systems limiting instruction on race or gender ideology without administrative preapproval, regulations that came in the wake of a new law giving campus leaders more oversight and authority over curricula.

Richard Lowery, a finance professor at UT-Austin and vocal DEI critic, said the state response comes after years of negligent oversight over academic institutions’ curricula.

The last time we visited Ceuta at Legal Insurrection, thousands of military-age men from Morocco invaded Spain by crossing the border into this bit of Spanish territory.

That was in late July. As we head into the second half of September, conditions certainly have not improved. Now, on top of this de facto invasion, there has been a reported case of monkeypox.

Ceuta has confirmed its first recorded case of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, in a 13-year-old unaccompanied Moroccan boy who entered the Spanish enclave during the mass invasion from Morocco at the end of July.

The Instituto de Salud Carlos III confirmed the infection on Thursday, 17 September, after local health authorities sent samples for testing. According to local reporting, the minor is isolated at the Piniers reception centre, under medical supervision and receiving treatment, while health officials are tracing contacts. A second suspected case involving another minor is reportedly being investigated but has not been confirmed at the time of writing.

The appearance of mpox adds to the enclave’s already raging health crisis since July, when around 80,000 illegal migrants invaded Ceuta from Morocco, with around 10,000 still in the city of 84,000 residents.

INGESA, Spain’s public health authority responsible for the enclave, activated Level 1 of the Hospital Universitario de Ceuta’s External Catastrophe Plan on 31 July. During the first month alone, migrant patients generated 10,725 consultations—an average of 335 per day—and more than 100 additional health workers were hired.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has announced that the Trump administration’s crackdown on fraud in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program prevented nearly $6 billion in taxpayer losses, including by shutting down thousands of fraudulent retailers and illegal devices used to process food stamp benefits.

Rollins said in a September 15 post on X that the administration’s anti-fraud efforts have prevented $5.8 billion in losses since President Donald Trump returned to office.

The crackdown has included shutting down nearly 1,840 illegal SNAP devices used to process Electronic Benefit Transfer cards and disqualifying 5,335 fraudulent retailers from the program.

“Those who defraud SNAP are stealing from taxpayers and taking resources away from Americans who genuinely need assistance,” Rollins said.

“We have zero tolerance for this abuse, and we will continue pursuing bad actors and protecting the integrity of the program.”
