Former President Barack Obama is supporting California’s mid-cycle redistricting effort as a “responsible approach” to Republicans drawing new maps in Texas.

Obama praised California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s ballot measure proposal to redraw congressional districts and tilt at least five congressional districts in the state towards Democrats at a fundraiser on Tuesday for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee.

“I believe that Governor Newsom’s approach is a responsible approach,” he said, according to excerpts obtained by POLITICO. “I think that approach is a smart, measured approach, designed to address a very particular problem in a very particular moment in time.”

In the days before the August 5 primary election in the troubled city of Hamtramck, Michigan, surveillance videos caught several people allegedly stuffing the municipal ballot drop box with suspicious ballots.

An August 1 video shows two men in a car handling stacks of ballots and placing them into Hamtramck’s drop box during the day. In another video, a pickup truck arrives at the drop box after dark with three people inside. The driver gets out of the truck and crams stacks of ballots into the box but has trouble because the box is so full.

Stuffing drop boxes while no one watching for cheaters is a recipe for election corruption. That is why President Donald Trump announced this week he will lead a movement to get rid of mail-in ballots, which can be cast by using a drop box. Trump also wants to stop using voting machines and return to voting with paper ballots.

Former NBC/MSNBC political director Chuck Todd sounded a lot like CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday’s edition of The Arena on CNN. In a poor attempt to deflect attention away from Democratic Party gerrymandering in states like California and Illinois, by falsely suggesting that Republican-controlled Florida was the “worst” state when it came to redistricting practices. He also argued that the way to solve a lot of those issues was to actively gerrymander.

What caused Todd to snap at his home state of Florida was CNN Republican commentator Scott Jennings calling out far-left states like California and Illinois for their wildly gerrymandered districts. “I mean, when I look at the states like Illinois and New York and even California with the supposed independent commission where Republicans get 40 percent of the vote and only have 17 percent of the seats,” he proclaimed.

California Democrats never miss a chance to lecture the rest of the country about “protecting democracy.” But when it comes to their own backyard, they can’t even answer the most basic question:

Who drew the newly proposed California congressional maps?

That’s exactly what Sacramento reporter Ashley Zavala asked Assembly Elections Chair Gail Pellerin and Senate Elections Chair Sabrina Cervantes yesterday. What followed wasn’t transparency. It was a master class in political dodge, deflection, and double-speak.

With the runaway Texas Democrats folding, it’s only a matter of time before the new redistricting plan passes and Republicans pick up five new House seats. The decision to gerrymander the Lone Star State was made in response to states like California, which, despite its “independent commission,” has a map that gives Democrats 43 of the 52 seats with just 60 percent of the total vote.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Wednesday confirmed that he and other local Democrats would hold a high-profile press conference geared towards combating the legislative effort to add five additional House seats in Texas.

“Donald Trump is about to have a very bad day,” Newsom wrote in a Wednesday post on X.

The president previously told reporters that Republicans were “entitled” to additional seats and said the FBI “may have to” go after Democratic lawmakers who fled the Lone Star State to ensure a vote approving the measure didn’t pass.

California voters want to keep the state’s independent redistricting commission in place, even as Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) pushes to redraw the maps by giving redistricting power to California‘s Democratic legislators, a new poll revealed.

Newsom wants to redraw the state’s lines in a way that favors Democrats to combat President Donald Trump’s push for Texas lawmakers to do the same in a way that favors Republicans.

A POLITICO-Citrin Center-Possibility Lab survey found that 36% of registered voters in California support returning congressional redistricting authority to state lawmakers. Sixty-four percent of voters in the state want to keep the commission.

A draft of California‘s new congressional districts could be released as early as Friday, a spokesman for California State Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas (D-CA) confirmed on Wednesday.

“We are aiming to release draft maps on Friday,” Nick Miller wrote in an email to the Washington Examiner.

As Texas Republicans push to redraw their congressional map along (district) lines more friendly to their party, a redistricting arms race has broken out between governors from both parties.

Texas state House Republicans’ redistricting plans could hypothetically flip as many as five Democrat-held congressional seats, an effort President Donald Trump supports.

In response, California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom is threatening a mid-decade redistricting of his own with a new ballot measure. On Monday, he penned a letter to President Donald Trump threatening to counter Republican districts if the Texas redistricting proceeded.

“You are playing with fire, risking the destabilization of our democracy, while knowing that California can neutralize any gains you hope to make.”

Governor Gavin Newsom is demanding that President Donald Trump respond to his threat to redraw the California congressional district maps, as President Donald Trump and others in the GOP have been pushing to redraw district maps in Texas and other states for Republicans to pick up a few more seats in Congress in the 2026 midterms.

Newsom wrote in the letter, dated August 11, “I am writing to ask you to call on the governor of Texas and other red states, who are acting on your request to draw new congressional maps through an unprecedented, mid-decade hyper-partisan gerrymander to rig the upcoming term elections, to stop those efforts.”

Democrats are increasingly explicit about their goals to turn illegal aliens into future voters — making Republican talk of amnesty or compromise more worrisome. Those efforts would be nothing less than hammering the final nails into the coffin of both the Republican Party and America.

At a Fort Worth “The People vs. The Power Grab” rally, Beto O’Rourke laid it out plainly.

“We absolutely failed to live up to the expectations that we set, so next time we win power, we’re going to drive that car like we stole it,” O’Rourke said. “We’re going to legalize every DREAMer, every DREAMer’s parents, every hardworking American doing backbreaking work that makes this country so g-dd-mn great in the first place, even greater as US citizens.”

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) recently introduced legislation to ban illegal aliens from voting in Washington, D.C. elections.

The legislation, joined by 21 of Britt’s Republican Senate colleagues, including U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), seeks to stop the 2022 law passed by the Washington, D.C. City Council allowing noncitizens to vote in local elections. The D.C. law allowed for illegal aliens and foreign embassy staff members the ability to vote in elections for mayor, attorney general and city council members.

Britt slammed the D.C. City Council for its “slap in the face to every American citizen” by allowing noncitizens to vote.

“This isn’t just about local school boards or fixing potholes. This is about the direction of our nation’s capital,” Britt declared. “In the city representing the strongest democratic republic in the world, the D.C. City Council chose to flagrantly violate one of democracy’s core principles. This is a slap in the face to every American citizen, whether they live in D.C. or not, who should be the only voters deciding who represents them in every election and at every level of government.”

“I am hopeful we gain bipartisan support in the Senate for this commonsense bill–it is our duty to protect the votes of hardworking American citizens, including those who came to our country legally and took the time and effort to go through the naturalization process. Ultimately, this is about strengthening the integrity of our elections,” she added.

Illegal voting charges against student prompt wider concerns about campus election integrity, civics education

Concerns about election integrity have arisen after a University of Michigan international student’s illegal voting at a campus polling site highlighted risks of same-day registration fraud and inadequate voter verification processes.

The College Fix recently obtained court records in the case of Haoxiang “Neil” Gao that suggest the international student was not well-educated about voting rights and spent less than 15 minutes registering and casting his ballot at the on-campus polling site, which was co-organized by two Democrat donors.

Just hours later, Gao told an election official he was “freaking out” when he realized he had voted illegally. He immediately contacted them in an attempt to take back his ballot – which cannot be done.

Russia collusion hoaxer Marc Elias was dealt a major defeat on Tuesday when a federal judge tossed his group’s lawsuit challenging Wyoming’s proof of citizenship voting law.

In his 17-page decision, U.S. District Judge Scott Skavdahl, an Obama appointee, ruled that the Equality State Policy Center lacked Article III standing to challenge HB 156. Enacted earlier this year, the statute mandates that prospective Wyoming voters provide documentary proof of citizenship and residency when registering to vote in the state.

“Under Article III of the Constitution the exercise of judicial power is confined to Cases and Controversies, which requires Plaintiff to establish a personal stake in the outcome — standing,” Skavdahl wrote. “Even accepting Plaintiff’s standing-related allegations as true and construing the record in its favor, Plaintiff has not adequately demonstrated its standing to sue on its own behalf or on behalf of others in this action. Absent Plaintiff’s showing of standing, the Court lacks subject matter jurisdiction over this lawsuit, and consequently it must be dismissed without prejudice.”

“The Court has not considered nor makes any comment on the merits of Plaintiff’s claims,” he added.

On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court temporarily blocked a lower court ruling centered on provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

In a 6-3 decision, the justices stayed a ruling by the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, which had sided against two American Indian tribes in an ongoing dispute over North Dakota’s state legislative map. The plaintiffs claimed that the state’s map “denied them an equal opportunity to elect their candidates of choice,” according to The Hill.

In its decision, the three-judge panel ruled (2-1) that private plaintiffs cannot “maintain a private right of action for alleged violations of § 2” of the VRA using federal civil rights laws. The ruling overturned a prior decision by the district court, which sided with the plaintiffs.

Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh — who handles emergency applications from the 8th Circuit — granted plaintiffs’ request on July 16 to place a temporary pause on the 8th Circuit’s order to provide the justices time to consider their request for relief.

According to Thursday’s SCOTUS order, the 8th Circuit’s decision is “stayed pending the filing and disposition of the petition for a writ of certiorari, if such writ is timely sought.” The stay will terminate if a potential petition from one of the parties to SCOTUS is denied by the high court or if SCOTUS agrees to take up the matter and hands down a final judgment in the case.

Even Democrats in Nevada’s state legislature–a key battleground state–now favor voter ID, but with a catch.

The catch was the bill also expands ballot drop boxes, typically favored by Democrats, which Republicans view with skepticism.

The bill passed the Senate Monday with a 16-5 vote, and now heads to Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo, who has expressed support in the past for voter ID, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Lombardo vetoed a bill earlier in the session that expanded ballot drop boxes. Assembly Speaker Steve Yager, a Democrat, sponsored Assembly Bill 499 as a compromise.

Nevada is one of 14 states that do not require photo ID for in-person voting. Since 2021, multiple states passed election reforms expanded some form of ID requirement to mail-in voting.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission will no longer receive federal funding after violating the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Civil Rights Division announced Wednesday.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said the group failed to follow laws outlined in HAVA, including providing voters with a complaint procedure to report violations, in a letter to the Wisconsin Election Commissioners.

“Quite surprisingly, we have learned that the Wisconsin Elections Commission has refused to provide any administrative complaint process or hearing regarding HAVA complaints against the Commission,” the letter reads.

Until the Wisconsin Commissioners make reforms to comply with HAVA, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission will not provide funding.

The Supreme Court on Monday decided to hear an election case from Illinois, which promises to clarify the legal standards federal election candidates must meet to challenge state election laws in federal court, according to Judicial Watch.

The case is known as Bost v. Illinois State Board of Electionswhere Representative Mike Bost (R-IL) and two other Republican presidential elector nominees filed a lawsuit against the Illinois State Board of Elections. The suit challenged a state law authorizing the acceptance of mail-in ballots up to two weeks after election day. A district court dismissed the case due to a lack of standing, and the ruling was upheld by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Standing has been a contentious issue since 2020. The plaintiff must meet three requirements to have standing in a federal lawsuit as established by the Supreme Court case Lujan v. Defenders of Wildlife (1992). They must show a concrete, particularized, and actual or imminent injury, there has to be a causal connection between the injury and the issue brought before the court, and it must be likely that the court’s ruling will redress the injury. The lower courts argued that because Rep. Bost had won the election, he failed to show a personal injury caused by the state election law.

Early voting in, voter ID out as Democrats advance sweeping election bill – Scranton Times-Tribune

A sweeping bill to overhaul the commonwealth’s election laws has passed the Pennsylvania House. Its changes would include creating in-person early voting, giving counties more time to process mail ballots, and requiring counties to use mail ballot drop boxes.

But it doesn’t include one provision that will likely be important to its prospects: a voter ID requirement, something that Republicans, who control the state Senate, have always seen as crucial to any election law deal.

State House leaders in both parties have lately said they are open to a voter ID requirement after years of partisan fights. The chamber even advanced a stand-alone bill, sponsored by two swing-district lawmakers, that would create a lenient voter ID requirement for all in-person voters.

However, a top state House Democrat said that bill was pulled from last week’s voting calendar because some Republicans in the chamber weren’t going to vote for it. Given the limited House Democratic support, the proposal would have been short of the 102 votes needed for final passage.
