MILTON COMES IN WITH TORNADOES AND LEAVES WITH FLOODING, DESTRUCTION – Hurricane Milton struck the west coast of Florida late Wednesday, October 9, 2024. Before it struck the coast, multiple tornadoes touched down, with one tornado reported killing 5 citizens. The storm surge appears to have been mercifully less than expected. So far, 12 are confirmed dead, but that number is expected to rise. 3 million people are reported without power.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — As many as five people were killed Wednesday after at least two confirmed tornadoes tore through St. Lucie County, Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday afternoon.
Erick Gill, a spokesperson for the county, said first responders are conducting “response and recovery efforts” after the twisters touched down starting at approximately 4:30 p.m. as Hurricane Milton closed in on Florida.
Sheriff Keith Pearson confirmed Wednesday afternoon that “multiple” people were killed at the Spanish Lakes Country Club, a senior community off Spanish Lakes Boulevard near Fort Pierce.

“Gov. DeSantis warns Milton looters could meet shooters in ‘Second Amendment state’,” Florida Politics reported Tuesday. The governor issued the warning while issuing preparedness updates for the approaching hurricane at the State Emergency Operations Center.
“If you go into somebody’s house after the storm passes, think that you’re going to be able to commit crimes, you’re going to get in really serious trouble,” DeSantis cautioned. “And quite frankly, you don’t know what’s behind that door in a Second Amendment state.”
That’s a continuation of “You loot, we Shoot” warnings DeSantis had issued for hurricanes Ian and Idalia in 2022 and 2023, the report reminds readers:
“At the end of the day, we are not going to allow lawlessness to take advantage of this situation. We are a law-and-order state, and this is a law-and-order community, so do not think that you’re going to go take advantage of people who’ve suffered misfortune.”

Florida residents and officials began assessing widespread damage Thursday after powerful Hurricane Milton brought strong winds, heavy rains and tornadoes as it moved toward the Gulf Coast and then barreled across the state.
Gov. Ron DeSantis told reporters that officials will have a better understanding of the extent of the damage as the day progresses. “The storm was significant but thankfully, this was not the worst-case scenario,” he said.
The storm has caused at least five deaths in a state where communities were still dealing with the damage from deadly Hurricane Helene two weeks ago.
The governor said the storm dumped up to 18 inches (45 centimeters) of rain in some areas, and officials reported completing dozens of high-water rescues.

This was the situation just as Milton sat on the verge of crossing the technical lines from a CAT 4 to a CAT 5, with winds only 2 mph shy of the CAT 5 rating – which it quickly surpassed just following this report:
Hurricane Milton is undergoing one of the fastest rapid intensifications ever observed in the Atlantic.
It is now a 155 mph Category 4 storm, just 2 mph shy of Category 5 status.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said Tuesday that Tampa residents have a life or death choice as Florida prepares for the coming of Hurricane Milton.
Noting that Tampa is currently predicted to have a 10 to 12-foot tidal surge, Castor said residents cannot expect to survive such an inundation.
“I can tell you right now they might have done that in others, there’s never been one like this,” Castor said in a CNN interview posted to YouTube.
“Helene was a wakeup call, this is literally catastrophic,” she added.
“And I can say without any dramatization whatsoever: If you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you’re gonna die,” she said. CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins was taken aback by the warning, which the mayor said she has never given before.
