This is a column that I had kicking around in my head a few weeks ago. I set it aside because every time I begin to ponder the current hot messiness of the Democratic Party it becomes apparent that the mess has gotten much worse since the last time I thought about it.
As the kids are fond of saying, there’s a lot to unpack there.
The Democrats I dealt with for most of my forty-plus years as an activist were a well-oiled political machine. Ever since President Donald Trump was first elected, the machine has been broken and leaking oil everywhere. This party isn’t a shadow of its former self; it bears no resemblance whatsoever to its former self. As we have been saying for years, moderate Democrats from the late 20th century would almost certainly be Republicans today.
While I don’t think that the 2026 midterm elections are a last stand proposition for the United States of America, I do believe that we are getting closer to an election like that. A strong showing by the Democrats in November that allows them to take back even marginal control of Congress will bring the country closer to the brink. Not exactly end times, but end times adjacent.
