Catholic Nuns Take On New York’s ‘Coercive’ Assisted Suicide Law thefederalist.com
News Source
EXCERPT:

Not a week seems to pass in which religious Americans are all but forced to go to court to defend their First Amendment rights from government overreach. It now appears the latest incident of this dynamic is coming full circle in Democrat-run New York.

On July 20, several orders of Catholic nuns and Catholic health care ministries sued the Empire State for enacting a new medically assisted suicide law they allege requires them to violate their religious faith. With the new statute set to take effect on Aug. 5, the Catholic plaintiffs in Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm v. James are seeking immediate relief in federal court to halt the state’s efforts to “coerce” them and other religious providers into forgoing their beliefs.

“Our clients have been dedicated for over 100 years each to serving some of New York’s most vulnerable citizens, and there are patients who actively seek them out. They actively seek them out because they share the same beliefs, they want to die in accordance with those beliefs, and New York is taking away their ability to do that,” Becket — Religious Liberty for All counsel Laura Slavis, whose group is representing the nuns and ministries, told The Federalist.

Signed into law earlier this year, New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act (MAID) grants terminally ill adults the ability to request that their physician administer life-ending drugs. The statute lays out the process by which patients may do so, as well as the form language they must use when filing such a request.

In their lawsuit, the Catholic nuns and health care ministries argue that MAID — “which builds upon requirements in the [New York’s] Palliative Care Information Act” — “conscript[s] even religious healthcare providers and institutions to participate in the provision of physician-assisted suicide.” They claim that, under these statutes, “medical providers caring for terminally ill New Yorkers will have to proactively inform and counsel their patients about their ‘option’ to kill themselves.”

A Pro-Lifer convicted of violating the FACE act received a settlement of seven figures from the Department of Justice. The DOJ settled with Paul Vaughn, who sued the government for unconstitutionally prosecuting him. A pro-life activist reached a settlement with the Department of Justice under President Donald Trump after facing up to 10 years in prison.

In 2021, Paul Vaughn was convicted of violating the FACE Act, which is a law that bans ”threats of force, obstruction or inflict property damage intended to interfere with reproductive health care services.”

This came after he protested outside of an abortion clinic in Tennessee in March of 2021.

After Vaughn was charged, his home was raided at gunpoint by federal agents, according to his lawyers.

After he was prosecuted, he filed a lawsuit against the DOJ and told Fox News Digital that he recently got a seven-figure settlement with the agency.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit is allowing President Trump’s executive order limiting mail-in voting to go forward. The court ruled the Democrats’ lawsuit is premature. The ruling increases the chances the President’s executive order will stand at least for the midterms, adding at least one layer of citizen verification to the questionable process of mass mailer voting.

In a blow to voters everywhere, a federal appeals court just made it easier for President Donald Trump to suppress mail-in voting. The midterms are three months away.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit affirmed a lower court’s decision Tuesday, arguing that a Democratic lawsuit challenging Trump’s mail-in voting executive order was premature. This result could have disastrous implications for the upcoming midterm elections: Not only does Trump’s executive order direct the Department of Homeland Security to create a national citizenship registry list, but it also orders the U.S. Postal Service to withhold mail-in ballots from states that don’t share voter registration data with the federal government.

The architect of the Covid-19 shutdown strategy, Dr. Anthony Fauci, is under more scrutiny as his diary has just been released that reveals a man driven more by ego than science. The diary suggests Fauci may have violated Federal laws in seeking to protect his reputation from the press, and in quashing dissent among the professional classes, including targeting doctors and scientists for terminations.

Anthony Fauci’s diary musing about dinners with famed journalists during the COVID-19 lockdowns evoked memories of neighbors who couldn’t have guests at their child’s funeral, or attend the birth of their grandchildren, or buy seeds at a local garden center.

Those narcissistic entries about his towering fame reminded me of local children who were barred from attending high school with their friends, couldn’t have proper graduations, or start college on time, many of whose lives were needlessly thrown off course forever.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul’s document dump of the diary entries and emails of former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases accentuates what we already knew about Fauci. Though his fans portrayed him as a saintly public health official merely sharing advice and evolving science with decision-makers, Fauci was a self-serving authoritarian operator who relied on fearmongering, coaxing, and lying to manipulate the behavior of hundreds of millions of Americans.

On Feb. 8, 2020, for example, Fauci acknowledged privately that after speaking with former CDC Director Tom Frieden, he believed COVID’s fatality rate was likely at 0.2-0.3% not 2%, and “acting like a bad influenza.”

The Marxist-Islamist Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, has just released what appears to be a de facto proscription list for his foreign-paid street fighters to target. He released a list of property owners, including their names and addresses, who own another home outside the city.

While the information is public, the signal is clear; Attack these people. Mamdani ally and national Democrat Socialists of America co-chair Megan Romer made that clear when she said on Fox News “We will win by making conditions so intolerable to the ruling class that they would rather give in to our demands than live with the disturbance we cause.” Disturbance is a dog whistle for violence. Ruling Class is a dog whistle for white people.

New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani is facing widespread criticism after his administration on Monday published a searchable database identifying wealthy property owners who may be subject to the city’s pied-à-terre tax. The administration says the database is intended to promote transparency. Critics, however, argue it effectively “doxxes” property owners by making them easier to identify and locate, unnecessarily exposing them to harassment, vandalism, and even potential acts of violence.

Mamdani is also drawing criticism for including properties valued between $1 million and $5 million in the database, despite repeatedly promoting the pied-à-terre tax as applying only to properties worth $5 million or more. As it turns out, that was part of the plan — which I’ll return to shortly.

The Department of Finance’s online database allows anyone to search properties and access the names and addresses of owners whose non-primary residences could be affected by the proposed tax.

A Department of Finance spokesperson told Fox News that state law required the publication of the property assessment roll: “As per State law, a property roll was released for public inspection. From this list, DOF will identify properties that may be subject to the new non-primary residence property surcharge.”

It’s true that property records have long been public. Even so, aggregating the city’s most expensive properties into a single, searchable database that anyone can access strikes me as dangerous. There’s no shortage of bad actors who could exploit such a list for nefarious purposes, from political targeting to criminal activity.

The New York Post editorial board called the database Mamdani’s “enemies of the people” list and asked why no one at City Hall stopped this “amateur-hour idiocy?”

Because the Democratic Socialist crew is obsessed with naming and shaming their “class enemies”: As national DSA co-chair Megan Romer explained on Fox News Sunday, “We will win by making conditions so intolerable to the ruling class that they would rather give in to our demands than live with the disturbance we cause.”

By now you’ll know that the assisted dying bill is back.

On 17 June, Labour MP Lauren Edwards introduced a new version of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. MPs will vote on whether it should proceed at its second reading on 11 September 2026. That’s less than two months away.

So what’s new?Honestly? Not much.

This is the same bill Kim Leadbeater brought forward in 2024 — the one that spent months being picked apart in the House of Lords, generating more than 1,300 amendments before running out of time in April. The bill fell not because it was defeated, but because Parliament was prorogued. Now it’s back, with two minor Lords amendments incorporated.

The first is a technical Wales amendment. Because delivering health services is devolved to the Welsh Government, the bill now requires the Senedd to give its approval before Welsh Ministers can set up the regulations for assisted dying in Wales. It’s a constitutional housekeeping change. It doesn’t alter what the bill actually does.

The second concerns people with eating disorders. This one is more serious. During the Lords debates earlier this year, peers raised concerns that someone with anorexia could potentially stop eating — deliberately — in order to reach the six-month terminal threshold and qualify for an assisted death. A minor amendment was added in the Lords to address this. But experts who work with people with eating disorders say it doesn’t go far enough. The loophole, they argue, remains. We agree.

As I type, the stock is marginally down, but that’s because the incoming CEO, David Deno, will clean house. The cracked company needs to be resealed. A deep, purifying purge could be disruptive for short-term traders, but mandatory to roll out the splendidly refurbished old Barrel.

Missy Masino missed the mark. Her Woke focus on logos and store decors undermined the traditional appeal and charm of Southern comfort foods. Ruining such an established, highly-valued brand is unforgivable in and of itself, even if the menu retained its gastronomical delights.

It did not!  More like gastronomical frights, with service that slights.

The state of the AI revolution can be confusing. At times, it can seem as if the latest artificial intelligence models are showing huge capability increases. But then you might come across another headline from the Wall Street Journal: “Big Companies Are Starting to Hire Again, Defying Predictions of AI Wipeout.” And from that piece:

The push to expand head count, at least modestly, is a reversal from the prevailing corporate messaging during much of the AI era. Major employers largely held back on adding people due to economic uncertainties or a belief that artificial intelligence could shoulder more tasks on the job. But some executives say the costs and limitations of AI now demand that more people be added; others want to hire people back following layoffs.

A horrifying video released in Iran has sparked outrage after the clip detailed “how and where” to kill First Lady Melania Trump. In the footage, a narrator speaking Farsi discusses “plots” while images show Mr and Mrs Trump on a map, detailing their code names and the precautions the Secret Service takes to secure the streets along their motorcades.

The narrator claims that “the documents used in this video are the result of extracting information from several anonymous security networks and satellite images”. They also propose a potential poisoning plot that could be executed by “freedom fighters” with access to locations the First Lady frequently attends.

The footage implies that Mrs Trump’s “love of fashion” reflects her vulnerability, even suggesting potential bribery schemes tied to her shopping patterns.

Billboards have also appeared on bridges and structures throughout Tehran, Iran, calling for the deaths of Mr Trump and his family members. One featured images of his children, Ivanka and Barron, alongside his wife.

All three were shown with their eyes closed, with the word “KILLED” in red across the top. It added: “Hey, Terrorist! Get ready to die.”

Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul released Dr. Anthony Fauci’s personal diary Sunday, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the first Trump administration officials who aligned with Fauci as the country shut down during COVID-19.

The diary entries portray an administration divided over lockdowns, school closures and messaging, with several Republican officials backing the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director’s efforts to maintain sweeping public health restrictions while sidelining dissenting voices. Fauci soon wrote that Hicks appeared to view him as a “future ally” after seeming uncomfortable with Trump’s desire for the COVID-19 team to hold two press briefings a day to boost morale and the economy through public transparency.

FIFA and corruption go together like peanut butter and jelly. You don’t have to be a fan of soccer to be aware of the 2015 FIFA corruption scandal that involved top officials taking $150 million in bribes to influence the awarding of the World Cup.

FIFA has earned a reputation as one of the most corrupt organizations on earth, which is why it was no surprise that Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino were thick as thieves.

Trump magically made the FIFA convictions disappear, and House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin has launched a corruption investigation.

Raskin wrote to Infantino and laid out what looks like a bribery scheme:

DOJ’s puzzling capitulation makes a lot more sense when we reflect on FIFA’s brazen campaign to curry favor with Donald Trump since his re-election—a campaign that has now paid rich dividends for FIFA just as North America hosted its first joint World Cup. Over the past 18 months, you invented a hilariously fake “FIFA Peace Prize” to award to President Trump, who has made no secret of the fact that he covets the Nobel Peace Prize. You leased an office space on the 17th floor of Trump Tower—a space that might retail for $600,000 a year—even though it; would only be used during the 39-day period of the World Cup. That comes to more than $15,000 a day.

These actions appear designed to induce President Trump and his Administration to make decisions in FIFA’s favor. Even your predecessor, Sepp Blatter (himself suspended from world soccer in the wake of the bribery scandal) noted that your “yearslong campaign to curry favor” was aimed at influencing the President, wryly noting that “Infantino thinks he’s the leader in the relationship.” This strategy of outright bribery is not new to your organization.

JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday (Jul 28) for the first time since the start of the Iran war, over which they have publicly disagreed.

Relations between Netanyahu and Trump have occasionally appeared strained in recent months, but both have sought to tone things down.

Tuesday’s meeting is expected to be dominated by the war, which began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, as Washington says it wants to give negotiations a chance.

Israel has not taken part in the latest round of hostilities between the United States and Iran, which flared earlier this month after an April ceasefire collapsed.

Tuesday’s meeting will be the eighth between the leaders since Trump’s return to office last year, as well as their first in-person talks since the war began.

“This is a great privilege, but it is also a great responsibility,” Netanyahu said before departing Israel on Monday.

Under current law, the properties are undertaxed, and plans are to apply the money that will be raised to help address New York’s budget deficit.
