Nearly 40 universities across the nation this year continue to offer neo-segregated dorms and housing opportunities despite a recent demand from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to end race-based discriminatory residential programs.

Research by The College Fix found 39 universities this fall semester operate “affinity housing” or “living-learning communities” geared toward students of a particular race or ethnicity.

Proponents argue such arrangements improve retention rates, foster peer mentorship, and support academic integration for historically underrepresented groups. However, these offerings have been deemed a euphemism for discrimination by the Trump administration. Another term used to describe such arrangements is “neo-segregation.”

Fix research identified 39 universities with one or more such residential programs, but because many universities operate multiple communities, the total number of individual segregated housing programs is substantially higher, coming in at 74.

Of the 39 universities, at least 28 offer housing geared toward black or African students, 17 toward Hispanic or Latino students, 10 toward Native American or Indigenous students, and nine toward Asian students. Several universities offer multiple affinity housing programs.

“I am not surprised that neo-segregated housing persists in American colleges and universities,” said Peter Wood, president of the National Association of Scholars, in an email interview with The College Fix.

The term “sexual and reproductive health and rights,” or SRHR, did not appear out of nowhere. It grew out of a political problem.

For years, the United Nations and Western governments spoke openly about “population control.” But that language generated resistance, particularly from developing countries that had every reason to distrust wealthy nations telling poorer nations that they had too many children. Worse, population programs in the 1970s and 1980s became associated with coercive practices, including forced or pressured contraception and sterilization. Even UNFPA now acknowledges that the move away from population targets came partly in response to abuses connected with population-control policies.

So the vocabulary changed.

Instead of controlling populations, the UN increasingly spoke about “reproductive health,” “reproductive rights,” and eventually “sexual and reproductive health and rights.” The language sounded softer. More personal. More rooted in health and individual rights.

One of the central figures in that transformation was Nafis Sadik, the longtime executive director of the United Nations Population Fund and Secretary-General of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo. Sadik aggressively promoted the reproductive-rights framework that came to dominate UN population policy. Cairo became the turning point.

The 1994 conference did not simply update population policy. It changed its vocabulary and architecture. UNFPA itself says Cairo “introduced the concepts of sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights” and advanced a new definition of population policy centered on reproductive health and women’s empowerment.

It’s tempting for us amateur observers of life and history to put events like September 11, 2001, in nice, neat, little boxes. It helps us understand momentous events and deal with the trauma.

The 9/11 mythology that has been nurtured, cared for, and augmented over the last 25 years hardly resembles the raw, searing pain we felt on that day and in the immediate aftermath of the attacks. We have sanitized it, drawn the emotion from it as we might draw poison from a snakebite, until what’s left is banal and boring.

The “Falling Man” is still comfortably anonymous. Ultimately, photographer Richard Drew and many historians view “The Falling Man” less as a single named individual and more as an “Unknown Soldier” representing the tragic fate of the thousands of people who died trapped in the towers that morning.

The much-debated (and much-maligned) 9/11 memorial is perhaps the most unsatisfactory manifestation of a national tragedy we have. The winning design, Reflecting Absence, was overly stark, abstract, and somber. No American flags, no religious symbols. Critics called it “hyperindividualized” rather than unifying.

Others found the memorial moving and appropriate. The museum’s historical orientation video and exhibits faced criticism from civil rights organizations and scholars who argued that the terminology used failed to sufficiently differentiate general Islam from extremist violent jihadism. I saw the orientation video, and aside from the narration not outright claiming that “THIS IS NOT ISLAM,” it told the story of the attacks as straightforwardly as possible.

A North Carolina Democrat has sparked outrage after endorsing the mass genocide of anyone who supports President Trump and his policies:

As Breitbart reported, North Carolina Democrat state legislative candidate Shelly Headen posted a Facebook story last week from a vacation that shows her in front of ovens in a German concentration camp memorial.

Headen was visiting Dachau, where the memorial states that the Nazis murdered 41,500 Jewish people.

The post accompanying the story says, “Visiting Dauchau [sic] Concentration Camp in Germany… This is where Trump supporters belong.”

You read this right. Headen says every Trump fan deserves to be burned to death like over 6 million Jewish people during the Holocaust.

It introduced him, in a news story, as a “nicotine-pouch salesman and onetime conservative pundit.”

That sentence is the story.

Staff writer Ryan King used it while reporting that Carlson had all but endorsed Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and called El-Sayed “obviously right” about 9/11, the New York Post reported.

Carlson’s Friday newsletter said El-Sayed “did not celebrate airplane hijackings or cheerlead Al-Qaeda.” He said the Democrat merely objected to how America answered the attacks.

El-Sayed’s 2021 line was that 9/11 “scarred our country in profound ways, but what we did after 9/11 scarred millions of other people.” He added that Americans “often fail to center them.”

Republican candidate Mike Rogers called that attitude disqualifying. Carlson called Rogers the problem.

When Lindsay Clancy’s trial for killing her three young children ended in a hung jury, the reason for the split became a bigger story than the verdict itself. The lone juror who refused to find Clancy not criminally responsible for her actions was the only black member of the panel, and the pile-on that followed has revealed something far uglier than one holdout‘s stubbornness.

No one ever disputed that Clancy killed her three children. The only question before Plymouth County Superior Court was whether she was criminally responsible or legally insane when she did it.

Since the judge declared a mistrial, several jurors have gone public, and one of them, Paula Devlin, has done more damage to her own credibility than to the holdout’s.

Devlin, who favored the not-criminally-responsible verdict, didn’t even hold back when she attacked the holdout juror. “He was very arrogant, he really did not take anything that anybody said,” Devlin said. “The nurses [on the jury], he tried to ask a question about the medications, and we went back to the report from South Shore Hospital. We had the toxicology report, we could see exactly the amounts. The nurses in the room spoke to that and talked to that. […] They spoke to that specific thing. That was a question that he had, and he just completely disregarded the information that they gave him.”
