The answer has to do with opposites. Scientists have found that the universe exists because it began with a slight imbalance between matter and antimatter. Particles of matter — that is, all of the electrons, protons and neutrons in the atoms and molecules of regular stuff — differ from particles of antimatter, which carry the opposite electric charge but are similar in many ways.

Matter and antimatter do not get along. When their particles collide, they annihilate each other in an intense burst of gamma-rays. Fortunately, antimatter is now extremely rare. Although antimatter had a foundational role in the formation of the universe, the fact that there is now so little of it is one of cosmology’s great mysteries.

Imagine a clock that doesn’t have electricity, but its hands and gears spin on their own for all eternity.

In a new study, physicists at the University of Colorado Boulder have used liquid crystals, the same materials that are in your phone display, to create such a clock — or, at least, as close as humans can get to that idea. The team’s advancement is a new example of a “time crystal.” That’s the name for a curious phase of matter in which the pieces, such as atoms or other particles, exist in constant motion.

The researchers aren’t the first to make a time crystal, but their creation is the first that humans can actually see, which could open a host of technological applications.

“They can be observed directly under a microscope and even, under special conditions, by the naked eye,” said Hanqing Zhao, lead author of the study and a graduate student in the Department of Physics at CU Boulder.

They showed the glue gun device can print bone grafts directly onto fractures and breaks during surgery by quickly designing the graft on the spot.

Bone grafts and implants have historically been made from metal or donor bone, while some recent studies have also used 3D-printed material. When a bone has broken in irregular ways, these implants need to be carefully designed and produced prior to the surgery which can potentially extend waiting and surgery times.

In a new study, researchers found that preschoolers are not receiving appropriate guideline-directed care for ADHD.

Clinical practice guidelines for this age group recommend beginning with family/behavioral therapy. Drugs are recommended by the guidelines only after therapy has failed to improve the situation or in very severe cases. But the researchers found that 42.2% of these 3- to 5-year-olds were given stimulant drugs before therapy could even be attempted.

“Clinical practice guidelines recommend medications as second-line treatment in cases with substantial dysfunction or lack of response to behavioral treatment,” the researchers write. Yet, they add, “more than one-third of patients lacked sufficient time for an evidence-based behavioral treatment before starting medications.”

The study was led by Yair Bannett at Stanford University and published in JAMA Network Open.

A new species of bacteria of the genus Bartonella has been found in the Amazon National Park in the state of Pará, Brazil, in phlebotomine insects, also known as sand flies. This type of insect is generally associated with transmitting leishmaniasis, but according to the researchers, the DNA of the newly discovered microorganism is similar to that of two other Andean species of bacteria, B. bacilliformis and B. ancashensis. These bacteria cause Carrión’s disease (also known as Peruvian wart and Oroya fever) and are both transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies.

There is currently no evidence in Brazil that this new species of bacteria can cause disease. However, since species of the genus Bartonella are responsible for several diseases in other countries, further studies are needed.

The research was conducted by Marcos Rogério André in partnership with Eunice Aparecida Bianchi Galati. Both researchers are affiliated with Brazilian institutions: the Faculty of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences of São Paulo State University (FCAV-UNESP) in Jaboticabal campus and the School of Public Health of the University of São Paulo (FSP-USP). The study was supported by FAPESP through two projects (22/08543-2 and 22/16085-4).

Astronomers have discovered extraordinarily powerful X-ray jets blasting from two supermassive black holes that are so ancient that the jets shine in the afterglow of the Big Bang.

Before now, one of the few ways to date the Dead Sea Scrolls was through palaeography (the study of handwriting) and radiocarbon dating. These methods place the age of the scrolls somewhere between the 3rd century B.C.E. and the 2nd century C.E. 

But a new AI date-prediction model may provide a more accurate date for the famous Dead Sea Scrolls. After using this new model, called Enoch, researchers have determined that the Dead Sea Scrolls may actually be older than previously thought. The findings, published in PLOS One, also indicate that two biblical scroll fragments date back to the same time as their presumed authors. 

AI and the Dead Sea Scrolls 

By using radiocarbon dating, palaeography, and a machine learning model, researchers working on the European Research Council project, The Hands That Wrote the Bible, narrowed down the age of the Dead Sea Scrolls to a more precise estimate. 

The team combined data from 24 Dead Sea Scrolls and the machine learning model to apply a Bayesian ridge regression method to the scrolls. From there, the team trained the model for date prediction. 

Enoch stems from BiNet, an in-house deep neural network that analyzes handwritten ink patterns. Now, Enoch can examine ink at a microscopic level through its curvature (called textural) and character shapes (called allographic). This data can provide analysis that standard palaeography can’t. It can also predict radiocarbon dating results by more or less 30 years.

The viral video app, which is linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and collects massive amounts of personal data on Americans, is supposed to shut down or be sold to an American buyer.

As previously reported by LifeSiteNews, President Joe Biden signed the law last April with the support of many in both parties, due to Chinese parent company ByteDance’s links to the ruling CCP and its military and surveillance operations, sparking national security concerns over the Chinese regime’s access to the personal data of TikTok’s American users. The Supreme Court upheld the law in a 9-0 decision in January, soon before Trump took office.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday titled, “Preventing Woke AI in the Federal Government.” The order states, “Americans will require reliable outputs from Al, but when ideological biases or social agendas are built into Al models, they can distort the quality and accuracy of the output.”

The new directive prohibits the federal government from purchasing any AI systems that default to anti-white or extreme ideologies. The EO singles out “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) as one of the most “pervasive and destructive of these ideologies.”

The order cites one major AI model that “changed the race or sex of historical figures — including the Pope, the Founding Fathers, and Vikings — when prompted for images because it was trained to prioritize DEI requirements at the cost of accuracy.”

Another AI model refused to produce images celebrating the achievements of white people, even while complying with the same request for people of other races. In yet another case, an AI model asserted that a user should not “misgender” another person even if necessary to stop a nuclear apocalypse.

While the Federal Government should be hesitant to regulate the functionality of AI models in the private marketplace, in the context of Federal procurement, it has the obligation not to procure models that sacrifice truthfulness and accuracy to ideological agendas.

Immediately after the Big Bang, which occurred around 13.8 billion years ago, the universe was dominated by unimaginably high temperatures and densities. However, after just a few seconds, it had cooled down enough for the first elements to form, primarily hydrogen and helium. These were still completely ionized at this point, as it took almost 380,000 years for the temperature in the universe to drop enough for neutral atoms to form through recombination with free electrons. This paved the way for the first chemical reactions.

The oldest molecule in existence is the helium hydride ion (HeH+), formed from a neutral helium atom and an ionized hydrogen nucleus. This marks the beginning of a chain reaction that leads to the formation of molecular hydrogen (H2), which is by far the most common molecule in the universe.

Recombination was followed by the ‘dark age’ of cosmology: although the universe was now transparent due to the binding of free electrons, there were still no light-emitting objects, such as stars. Several hundred million years passed before the first stars formed.

Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences recently completed a study outlining their design and development of a hydrogel electrolyte that uses urea and zinc acetate to enable zinc-ion batteries to bend without losing voltage.

The study, published in the international edition of Angewandte Chemie, sought an alternative to conventional means of improving flexibility.

Quasi-solid-state electrolytes, for instance, encounter limitations in terms of cost, durability, and environmental impact — limitations overcome by the inexpensive, eco-friendly zinc acetate compound.

That’s not to say the researchers faced zero obstacles along the way.

Zinc acetate’s poor solubility, according to a summary published on Tech Xplore, interferes with performance, meaning the researchers needed to cultivate a “salting out” strategy — that is, removing hydration shells around polymer chains — in order to strengthen the electrolyte’s durability.

“This approach overcomes the usual limits of the low-cost [zinc acetate] salt, making it much better at resisting wear and tear,” noted researcher Li Zhaoqian. “It allows the material to withstand repeated processes of zinc plating and stripping, as well as other physical stress, improving its overall durability.”

Zinc-ion batteries are used in a range of applications, from smart technology to electric vehicles and renewable power storage, serving as a much more sustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries, which tend to be expensive to source and contain hazardous pollutants.
