Elon Musk has announced plans to insert another Neuralink implant into another patient. He also announced he intends on Neuralink to eventually give humans “superpowers.” Musk hopes to make AI a friend and not a threat to humanity, promising to develop “a closer symbiosis between human intelligence and digital intelligence.”

Imagine being able to manipulate much of the automated world around you with your mind alone. Imagine having perfect memory recall and the capacity to hold more facts in your mind within a single thought. These are just some of the things the hyperbolic PT Barnum of our day is promising in his push to gain traction with Neuralink.

Neuralink plans to implant its device into a second human patient in about a week, according to the company’s founder, Elon Musk. During a broadcast on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk shared that the company aims to have ‘high single digits’ of patients with the device by the end of the year. He and several Neuralink executives discussed the brain chip’s capabilities and future potential, such as treating paralysis and memory loss. They also addressed improvements for future surgeries to prevent issues encountered during the first implantation on Arizona man Noland Arbaugh. Musk emphasised that the long-term goal is to reduce the civilisational risk posed by AI by fostering “a closer symbiosis between human intelligence and digital intelligence.”

Elon Musk stated that the goal is “to give people superpowers,” as he announced that Neuralink will implement changes to address the issue of its electrode threads retracting from brain tissue in upcoming surgeries. To mitigate this problem, the proposed fixes include removing an air pocket that may have caused the threads to retract in the first surgery. Additionally, the company plans to insert the threads more accurately on the folds of the brain in future procedures, he explained.

Researchers at Penn State have developed a new 3D-printed material designed to advance soft robotics, skin-integrated electronics, and biomedical devices. This material is soft, stretchable, and self-assembled, overcoming many limitations of previous fabrication methods, such as lower conductivity and device failure. According to Tao Zhou, an assistant professor at Penn State, the challenge of developing highly conductive, stretchable conductors has persisted for nearly a decade. While liquid metal-based conductors offered a solution, they required secondary activation methods—like stretching or laser activation—which complicated fabrication and risked device failure.

Cirrhosis is chronic, progressive end-stage liver disease that occurs when scar tissue prevents the liver from functioning normally. Studies have shown that two of the leading causes of cirrhosis — alcohol use disorder and viral hepatitis — occur more frequently in transgender individuals, but there has been little research examining if these risk factors translate into greater incidences of cirrhosis among transgender patients.

A new study from Keck Medicine of USC published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology finds that transgender adults have double the prevalence of cirrhosis compared to cisgender adults (people whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth), suggesting a need for more supportive, preventive care.

One of the great fears of modern times is that generative AI systems are giving malicious actors unprecedented power to lie, manipulate and steal on a scale previously unimaginable and that this will undermine our systems of trust, democracy and society.

Examples abound of from election interference to the mass-production of fake reviews. Indeed, it’s easy to imagine that these are just a small fraction of the insidious endeavor currently undermining our way of life.

The truth is more nuanced of course but it raises the broader question of how to better understand these malicious AI techniques, where they are being applied, by whom, on what scale and for what purpose.

Merrick Garland’s Justice Department announced the successful taking down of a Russian AI Bot farm on Elon Musk’s X Platform, claiming the intention was to spread misinformation about the Ukraine War intended to create support for the Russian nation.

The statement from the Justice Department read, “The social media bot farm used elements of AI to create fictitious social media profiles — often purporting to belong to individuals in the United States — which the operators then used to promote messages in support of Russian government objectives.” This report follows claims from a U.S. intelligence official that Russia wants Trump to win.

The Russia election meddling narrative was something we all saw coming back in January 6, 2021, so don’t call me psychic for predicting it back then. The early deployment of the election meddling narrative does suggest, to this writer, that possibly the elites may have determined the level of cheat it would take to overcome what their internal reality is telling them might put their operations at too high a risk,

Therefore, they may be falling back on “winning” the House to keep the legal pressure on Trump, as well as to impede his legislative efforts, and bank on consolidating power once and for all in 2028. Most likely, not everyone would be onboard with this strategy, so it’s reasonable to assume to effort to remove Biden and find a “viable” candidate that can finish off America now will only be increasing. The recent exposure video of ABC Interviewer George Stephanopoulos “confessing” he doesn’t see Biden finishing another four-year term testifies to that possibility.

The United States has disrupted a Russian disinformation campaign involving AI-powered bots used to create fake profiles on the social media platform X, the Justice Department said Tuesday.

Officials seized two internet domains and searched 968 social media accounts that Russian operatives allegedly used to create an artificial intelligence “bot farm” and peddle disinformation in the United States and other countries, the department said in a statement.

“The social media bot farm used elements of AI to create fictitious social media profiles — often purporting to belong to individuals in the United States — which the operators then used to promote messages in support of Russian government objectives,” the statement said.

The U.S. actions “represent a first in disrupting a Russian-sponsored Generative AI-enhanced social media bot farm,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray.

The campaign — aimed at sowing “discord in the United States and elsewhere” — was developed by a senior editor of RT, a Russian state-owned media outlet, financed by the Kremlin and aided by an officer of Russia’s FSB security service, the Justice Department said.

A team of astronomers has made an exciting discovery about the temperate exoplanet LHS 1140 b: it could be a promising “super-Earth” covered in ice or water.

LHS 1140 b, once thought to be a mini-Neptune, is now considered a possible super-Earth with a nitrogen-rich atmosphere, as suggested by James Webb Space Telescope data. Located in a habitable zone, it may have conditions favorable for liquid water, making it a key focus for future astrobiological studies.

When it was first discovered, astronomers speculated that the exoplanet LHS 1140 b might be a mini-Neptune. This means it would be an essentially gaseous planet, but very small in size compared to Neptune. However, after analyzing data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) collected in December 2023 — combined with previous data from other space telescopes such as Spitzer, Hubble, and TESS — scientists have come to a very different conclusion.

Located about 48 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cetus, LHS 1140 b appears to be one of the most promising exoplanets in its star’s habitable zone, potentially harboring an atmosphere and even an ocean of liquid water. The results of this discovery by Université de Montréal astronomers are available on ArXiv and will soon be published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Researchers at University of California San Diego have found that the most common form of liver cancer — one with a high mortality rate — can be better targeted and treated using an innovative new stem cell-derived therapy, according to a recently published study in Cell Stem Cell.

The treatment, not yet studied in patients, involves the lab engineering of natural killer (NK) cells — white blood cells that destroy tumor cells — to more effectively battle hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), one of the most treatment-resistant types of solid tumor.

Genetically modified NK-cell therapy doesn’t require personalization like chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-expressing T-cell therapy — a relatively new, personalized form of immunotherapy. That means an NK-cell therapy could be mass produced and shelf-ready for patients, who could begin therapy without delay, their new research shows.

A technology coalition has urged U.S. President Joe Biden to promote “positive” legislation for the crypto industry ahead of the November elections.

The call from Chamber of Progress, a U.S. trade group that represents tech firms across the country, comes after Biden has refused to back down from the presidential race despite an unimpressive performance at the first presidential debate where cryptocurrency was left out of the conversation.

A snub of the emerging sector

Both Biden and Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump didn’t mention the crypto industry during their first debate late last month. As a result, a memecoin based on independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr, $BOBBY, saw a 9.5% spike during the night of the debate. It looks like Japan’s preparation for a potential war with China is going to include high-tech destroyers equipped with railguns and lasers. The destroyers are being developed by Japan’s Ministry of Defense’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency. They are receiving some technical assistance from Germany, France, and the U.S.

Japan’s military development in the last 10 years has been decidedly ramped up from previous decades where their non-aggression constitution prevented them from expanding as they have of late. It is in the best interests of those that wish to keep China in check to aid in the continuation of that increasingly militaristic trend.

Any hope of a one-superpower-reality with China on top is sure to be checked not just by the U.S., but by Japan as well, a growing power militarily that by herself might soon have the capacity to meet any expansionist threat from China.

Summary and Key Points: Japan is progressing towards equipping its future 13DDX destroyers with advanced electromagnetic (EM) railguns and high-powered lasers.

-Developed by Japan’s Ministry of Defense’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA), these destroyers aim to counter high-speed threats, including hypersonic missiles.

-Japan has been developing railgun technology since 2015, achieving a projectile speed of 4,470 mph in a 2016 demonstration.

-Collaborating with French and German authorities and seeking insights from the U.S. Navy, Tokyo aims to overcome the energy challenges associated with railguns, potentially succeeding where other nations have faltered.

Japan’s 13DDX Destroyers: Pioneering Railgun Technology for Future Warfare

It is no secret that Japan produces gizmos and gadgets on a scale not seen in the West. While its consumer products, from robot dogs to micro washing machines, may stand out to those who visit the Asian nation, military analysts are now watching another technology that Tokyo has gone all in on—namely, railguns, which could be employed on the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s (JMSDF) new class of destroyers.

International military analyst firm Janes reported that the JMSDF has begun to determine if it could acquire a new class of warships—the 13DDX future destroyer—that would be equipped with “electromagnetic (EM) railguns and high-powered lasers.”

The 13DDX was reportedly developed by Japan’s Ministry of Defense’s (MoD) Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA), and in addition to being armed with railguns and lasers, the future destroyers could be further equipped with other types of directed energy weapons (DEW) systems, which could be coupled with a multifunction radar platform. The system could be optimized to counter high-speed targets—and while not explicitly stated that could likely include hypersonic weapons.

Railguns: Big in Japan

As previously reported, Tokyo has been engaged in developing a railgun since 2015, with the aim of being able to stop incoming missiles—including the aforementioned hypersonic missiles—that could be fired at the island nation. The goal of the program has been to mount such a weapon on a warship to add greater flexibility to the system, and a 2016 demonstration of a railgun had a projectile reach a speed of approximately 4,470 mph, or 5.8 times the speed of sound.

On paper, the system offers great promise, but railguns have numerous hurdles to clear, particularly the energy required for the weapon to operate as advertised. The basic technology already exists, which includes a very large power source, a pair of parallel rails, and a moving armature. The concept itself is rather simple, but the basic problem has been one of obtaining enough power to actually launch a projectile in a controlled and reliable manner.

A railgun could require millions of amps to create a magnetic field required to launch the projectile.

Tokyo has already realized it probably can’t go it alone, and in May, the ATLA announced it had struck an agreement with French and German authorities to co-develop the technology that could lead to the successful employment of the platform. The French Ministry of Armed Forces, the German Ministry of Defense, and the French-German Research Institute of Saint-Louis (ISL) are among the entities that could work with ATLA on the future development of railguns.

Tokyo Looking to Washington

It was also in May that ATLA announced it had sent officials to Washington to glean additional insight from the United States Navy, which has also worked toward the development of a railgun.

The U.S. Navy invested upward of $500 million into its electromagnetic railgun (EMRG) program, which had a goal to develop a weapon that was capable of firing projectiles at hypersonic speeds of 4,500mph or more. Because of the high speed, mass, and kinetic energy, the projectile wouldn’t even need to contain explosives to inflict damage. However, after hundreds of millions of dollars were invested over a decade, the sea service effectively scuttled its efforts to develop the technology in 2021.

Perhaps the JMSDF will succeed where the U.S. Navy has failed.

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, will soon begin taking down posts that use the term “Zionists” as a proxy for hate speech against Jews, the social media conglomerate announced on Tuesday.

The landmark policy will extend the criteria for antisemitic and what it calls “tier 1 hate speech” to include misuse of the term “Zionist” when it is “used as a proxy to refer to Jewish or Israeli people.”

“We do not allow content that attacks people on the basis of protected characteristics such as nationality, race, or religion, among others,” the announcement reads. “We do allow people to criticize adherents of political affiliations and ideologies.”

However, for cases in which the term is used to refer to “supporters of a political movement,” the policy will not be invoked.

North Carolina’s attorney general has urged the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a federal rule that regulates ghost guns—untraceable weapons often made at home from kits—like other firearms.

Attorney General Josh Stein has asked the Supreme Court to reverse a lower court decision that overturned the ghost gun rule, arguing that it’s a common-sense measure to prevent gun violence and help law enforcement solve crimes.

In North Carolina, Stein said there has been a spike of more than 1,700 percent in ghost gun recoveries from 2020 to 2023.

In a clarification to the Gun Control Act of 1968, ATF added kits and parts that can be easily converted to fully-functional firearms to the definition of a gun, subjecting them to the same rules as conventionally manufactured weapons.

The Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit struck it down as an impermissible expansion of the GCA and the appeal of that decision will be heard by the Supreme Court during its next term.

Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, now X, has been a struggle — and now it looks like the platform’s user growth has stalled.

According to figures seen by the Financial Times, X said its number of global daily active users was 251 million in the second quarter of this year — just 1.6% above what it was a year ago. Before Musk acquired the social media platform for $44 billion in October 2022, Twitter had experienced double-digit year-over-year growth, including 33.8% growth in the second quarter of 2022.

Meanwhile, X said Tuesday the platform had around 570 million monthly active users during the second quarter — up 6% year-over-year.

Many users have left the platform over concerns about hate speech since Musk’s takeover. That combined with Musk’s fight with major advertisers, including Walmart and Disney, has sent the company’s value tumbling 71.5% since Musk’s takeover.

As of November 2023, X was worth $12.5 billion, according to a disclosure from Fidelity — which had worked with Musk on his purchase of the platform — obtained by Axios. Months earlier, a leaked memo valued X at $19 billion — or less than half of what he paid for it in 2022. Analysts have said X is falling behind its rivals, and daily active users on the platform were down 23% from October 2022 to March.

Meta’s rival platform, Threads, reached 175 million monthly active users in its first year, according to chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. In April, Threads counted 28 million daily active users, beating out X, which had 22 million.

Threads was the fastest-growing app ever when it was released last July, and counted 100 million sign-ups in its first week. However, usage eventually fell, and Zuckerberg said in an earnings call in February the platform had “[blown] up before we’re ready for them to.”

Humans or climate change? Debate has raged for decades over which of these factors led to the extinction of the Ice Age megafauna which were once widespread on every continent except Antarctica.

But now a review article analysing existing research from over the years claims that the decline of megafauna can most probably be attributed to hunting by ancient humans.

The peer-reviewed review is published in the journal Cambridge Prisms: Extinction.

Megafauna are any animal – mammal, bird, reptile – weighing more than about 45kg, about the same as a grey wolf.

According to the fossil record, at least 161 species of large mammal were driven to extinction in the past 50,000 years.

This figure shows extinction of large mammals during the late Quaternary period (2.58 million years ago to today) related to body size. Former President Donald Trump has made a fervent plea on Truth Social, urging Republican leaders and legal representatives to combat what he claims is widespread voting fraud. In a direct and uncompromising post, Trump voiced his concerns about non-citizen migrants allegedly obtaining the right to vote through initiatives supported by “crooked Democrat Politicians” and a “dishonest Justice Department.”

Trump’s message stressed the urgency for Republicans to pass what he refers to as the Save Act to safeguard the integrity of the voting system, which he describes as “under siege.” He specifically named Republicans Harmeet Dhillon and David, urging them to initiate legal actions to halt these practices, which he argues are tactics for Democrats to secure wins by deceit.

In his fiery discourse, Trump criticized the current administration, labeling President Joe Biden as an “incapacitated moron” and attributing his election to fraudulent activities allegedly orchestrated by Democrats at various government levels. He also targeted the Justice Department, calling it “CORRUPT” and incapable of addressing these issues.

Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has announced plans to develop the “Nigerium,” a digital currency that is designed to give the Nigerian nation a back-up currency not so affected by the world currency market. The announcement was made by the NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi.

The prospect of nation-states developing digital currencies insulated from the volatility of world currencies is a two-edged sword to this writer. On one hand, digital currency gives small-scale communities a chance to create viable value-exchanges protected from the tyranny of large-scale powers.

On the other hand, government control of a digital currency means total government control over citizens’ lives, who must rely on their good standing with government to have access to exchanging value with others, has obvious risks. If the government allows small-scale communities the power to create their own independent digital currencies, then the threat is blunted.

Abdullahi stated this when he welcomed a delegation from the University of Hertfordshire Law School, in Abuja, adding that that the ultimate goal is to unite the public and private sectors to develop a domestic blockchain.

The people from University of Hertfordshire Law School said that an indigenous blockchain would ensure that Nigerian data and personal information remain under local control, rather than being managed by international co-developers who may not prioritize Nigeria’s interests.

Moreover, they added that reliance on established blockchain platforms such as Ethereum places Nigeria at the discretion of international developers who do not operate under Nigerian law.

In a ruling that made it clear to Americans that the problem of insurrection isn’t just a Democrat one, it’s also a Republican one, 6 Supreme Court Justices from both the left and the right gave the Biden administration the green light to continue to pressure private companies to silence their dissenters.

The court ruled that Americans don’t have standing to challenge the unconstitutional action, playing a semantic word game arguing this is not an affirmation of the action’s constitutionality but merely a rejection of the people bringing suit to bring suit in the first place. The ruling exposes the Uniparty level of corruption Americans face in their battle to restore the republic from foreign enemies, especially those from within our own nation, Democrats and Republicans siding with totalitarianism.

Amy Comey Barrett revealed she is either compromised or an insurrectionist plant all along, giving the majority opinion in words that defy fact and logic. She claimed, “Putting these requirements together, the plaintiffs must show a substantial risk that, in the near future, at least one platform will restrict the speech of at least one plaintiff in response to the actions of at least one Government defendant. Here, at the preliminary injunction stage, they must show that they are likely to succeed in carrying that burden. On the record in this case, that is a tall order.”

One “proof” that man-made climate change is real and is posing an existential threat to the world is the increase in climate disasters, but their research shows climate disasters are DECREASING, not increasing.

The researchers claim, “We conclude that the patterns observed are largely attributable to progressively better reporting of natural disaster events. The above result sits in marked contradiction to earlier analyses by two UN bodies (FAO and UNDRR), which predicts an increasing number of natural disasters and impacts in concert with global warming. Our analyses strongly refute this assertion as well as extrapolations published by UNDRR based on this claim.”

According to the Pentagon, the Chinese navy has surpassed the US navy in terms of the number of battle force ships over the past decade, thanks to China’s status as the world’s top ship-producing nation by tonnage.

A US Congressional Research Service report released in October of last year predicted the PLA would have 440 ships by 2030 while the US will have 290.

Senior US Air Force officials have also noted the PLA’s potential to become the world’s biggest air force. It now has over 3,150 non-trainer and non-drone aircraft, compared with about 4,000 for the American military.

While China continues to catch up on air and sea capabilities, “both sides have essentially come to a balance of power in military presence in the West Pacific”, said Hu Bo, director of Beijing-based think tank South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative.

Tumors that travel to the lungs, or lung metastases, pose a formidable challenge in the realm of cancer treatment. Conventional chemotherapy often falls short because it’s inefficient. It doesn’t directly target the lungs and accumulate in a high enough concentration to kill tumors.

My colleagues and I from the Wang lab and Zhang Research Group at the University of California, San Diego have spent the past five years developing biohybrid microrobots, tiny objects made of both natural and synthetic materials, that can be used in medicine.

In our newly published research, we made a green microalgae-based biohybrid microrobot that can deliver chemotherapy directly to the lung and treat lung metastases.

Researchers at the Broad Institute have improved gene-editing to efficiently insert entire genes into human cells, offering potential for single-gene therapies for diseases like cystic fibrosis. This method combines prime editing with new enzymes to enhance editing efficiency, potentially revolutionizing gene therapy.

The gene-editing technique employs prime editors along with advanced enzymes known as recombinases. This method has the potential to lead to universal gene therapies that are effective for conditions like cystic fibrosis.

Researchers at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard have enhanced a gene-editing technology that can now efficiently insert or replace entire genes in human cell genomes, potentially making it suitable for therapeutic uses.

NEW DELHI: More than 40 per cent of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder were free of symptoms and about a quarter achieved complete mental health, a Canadian study has found. Having a trusted confidant was the most influential factor in achieving complete mental health, according to co-author Ishnaa Gulati, a Master of Public Health graduate from the University of Toronto.
“The adoption of spirituality as a coping mechanism and the absence of chronic pain were also identified as strong predictors for psychological flourishing,” Gulati said.
Bipolar disorder is marked by extreme mood and energy swings, and can sometimes be accompanied by hallucinations and delusions.
However, despite these encouraging results, the researchers said that people with a history of the mental condition were less likely to be flourishing compared to their peers.
These findings are published in the Journal of Affective Disorders Reports.

Swedish researchers have created tissue-engineered urethras using 3D bioprinting. Developed at Chalmers University of Technology, the urethral structures are printed with a bioink that integrates human cells with a supportive scaffold, ensuring they can support viable cells and develop proper cell structures. This technology offers a promising solution for patients with severe urethral damage, moving closer to practical medical applications, including a potential for future use in urethral transplants.

Several leading institutions collaborated on this groundbreaking project. Graduate students Johanna Odbratt and Matilda Öjmertz from Chalmers University of Technology presented the findings, working alongside experts from the RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and the University of Gothenburg. Local companies Verigraft, known for its personalized tissue-engineered vein and artery grafts, and Cellink, a BICO subsidiary and leader in advanced bioinks and bioprinting, contributed significantly to this research.

The work further supports the idea that pathogens—particularly vector-borne pathogens—could play a role in mental illness.

Bartonella are a group of vector-borne bacteria transmitted primarily via arthropods like fleas, lice, and potentially ticks, but also by the animals that harbor them.

For example, the species Bartonella henselae is associated with cat scratch disease, which until recently was thought to be a short-lived (or self-limiting) infection. There are at least 45 different known Bartonella species, of which 18 have been found to infect humans.

Improved methods for detecting Bartonella infection in animals and humans have led to the diagnosis of bartonelloses in patients with a host of chronic illnesses, as well as in some patients with psychiatric symptoms.
